I've made the decision to purchase a Sager after having Alienware machines for the last 8-10 years.

It looks like the NP8170 will be my choice though the 8180 is tempting.

I live in Canada, so does it make more sense to purchase directly from Sager or from a reseller? I've been through so many reseller sites that my head is spinning.

I guess the bottom line is that will I get the same level of support and service (remember I'm in Canada) as if I purchase direct from Sager.

Will I need to pay extra duties, etc. by going through a reseller? I never had a tax or duty issue buying from Dell / Alienware.

    Thanks for your help.

    Good Morning Lowjack!

There is really not much different purchasing from Sager as opposed to a reseller. You actually are better off, as you most likely will get better service all around going with a reseller. With express shipping that does handle the brokerage fees. But, no matter who you go through, you will have to pay local taxes upon the device getting delivered.

    I hope that helps.

    Cheers!

Local taxes upon delivery? You mean on top of money we spend at the finalized checkout and charge, during delivery the UPS man will take out a calculator and a credit card swiper to charge us for tax ? :D

Yes, you only pay us for the price of device and shipping. I am not quite sure how they do it upon delivery, but it is collected some how. I would suggest calling local customs office and inquiring. But, yeah, just be aware it can occur.

Interesting. I have never had to pay when I purchased Alienware or Apple. I wonder if they have Canadian operations and somehow that makes a difference?

I have always had to pay for shipping (or received it free), but never had to pay local taxes. I live in Ontario.

I have ordered hundreds of items from several online businesses, and have never had to fork out extra cash besides what I paid at checkout.. I hope it's not something new you guys are doing, like flagging states to pay taxes like Amazon is doing with some states. but I believe it is all charged online. I'm in Texas.

It's not something that applies if you live in the US. It's only for orders internationally, especially to Canada. Canadian buyers have to pay their governmental (GST) and Provincial (PST) taxes on delivery, as well as any brokerage fees (which depend on the shipping method chosen).

For the US, unless you live in the state in which the retailer is in you won't be charged tax directly. Most states do require you to pay that tax at the end of the year when you file your taxes though. It's often listed as a "use tax".

    Hi,

Likes others have said you won't have to pay duty it's brokerage fees that must be paid. Thank you Malibal #2 for linking the guide.

There's no way around brokerage it has to be paid either by you or the reseller.
