Yeah it says battery life is horrible... the main con to the notebook, apparently. And it should be worse with those sagers with gtx 280's.

Someone should test the battery life when the clocks are turned down on the 280M. The powermiser test.

Notebookjournal says that if you can overcome the (IMO) pathetic battery life, You should be set on this notebook. The article seems to praise the cooling solution, too... It seems to be perfect. (Although I dunno about CPU at 80c max).

Wow, even my M860ETU with a QX9300 and a 280M gets better battery life.

Other than that, the W860CU seems pretty solid.

The G60Vx has pretty low numbers..I'm guessing that's because of the underclocked GPU. The Dell did pretty good in some of those games as well.

The review was conducted with a 260M, so its safe to say the 280M will fare worse in battery life (and better in other respects obviously!)

The 1600x900 panel seems to have pretty average brightness. I was hoping the fact that it was LED would mean it was better than the previous sup-bar displays Clevo has used. It redeems itself somewhat with very good contrast score, but that usually goes hand-in-hand with poor brightness.

For me, I like a lot of brightness on a glossy panel, it helps reduce reflections during the day, and you can always turn it down at night when reflections arent an issue.

But that's for a European unit. From what I understand, American Sager/Clevo resellers use higher quality LG panels.

I hope you're right up there^ My only issue I had about my Sager NP8660 was the screen not being bright enough. And wats up with the leather palm rest? I thought it was gonna be matte finished. Other than the short battery life, everything is perfect for me to get this laptop.

At least it doesn't seem to heat up easily, which was a problem for some people with the M860TU, I think.

Did they test the older version???

If you check the hand-place in the first pages pictures it's rough (as in the old W860 pictures) but in all the W860 sold around that surface is smooth...

If the battery life is that one (and worst with my GTX 280M) so I hope Clevo will produce soon a bigger battery ;)...uuuuh, I'll miss the XPS M1330 in class, with the 3.5 hours of battery after 2 years of use.....

Mmm, 1/2 a star for mobility? Has this guy tried to carry a HDX before? If not he'd be surprised how they compare and would increase that rating.

...so still waiting on that first 'professional' review.

Again, 1/2 star for mobility is probably b/c of the short battery life ;)

It gets a bad score in mobility because of the battery life =\
Notebookjournal gives stars regarding the category and it seems that the W860CU is one of the worst laptop in its cat (for battery only =p).

I understand this is a gaming machine, but the battery life is really abysmal. I think I am gonna skip the W860, and wait a bit longer for the next CPU's and hope they can give some more battery life. That, and the screen brightness isn't too great either.

Oh, and what's up with the fake leather being back on the palm rest? I seriously hope they reviewed and older system, because the leather looks...well...really crappy.

Notebookcheck doesn't tend to have the most healthiest of reputations around here. PC magazines too always seem to make a hash of reviewing Clevo models. Despite the bias, many of the members here tend to write more thought-out reviews.

Oh and didn't you catch the edit to that post already. No cross-poster am I ;)

There will be no W860ECU. The 45nm Nehalem quads will not be succeeded until 32nm Sandy Bridge in H1 2009. Any new quads on Nehalem or Westmere, if Intel decides to refresh it, will be on the same socket and will most likely be compatible with the W860CU.

Honestly who wants a quad i7 chip with a GTX 260m and still expects mobility. The new mobile i7s use a lot of power, I doubt any notebook with one of those will get decent battery life at all.

I wonder if the problem is the new ion-polymer technology for the batteries, since they're only 42.18 Wh, compared to, for example, a 6-cell 56 Wh in the M15x. Does anyone know if the battery bay in the W860CU/W870CU is significantly smaller than the bays in the M860/M570?

Li-poly cells are lighter and can be made into any shape or size compared to conventional li-ion cells, which can only be made into cylinders. Li-poly cells yield ~15-20% more capacity per density compared to li-ion, so technically we would be getting more battery life. Nevertheless, Clevo decided to use less cells for the new battery packs, which explains the low capacity that we are seeing. The battery pack on the W860CU and W870CU are flatter than the ones found on the M860TU and M570TU, however the footprint is larger.

Personally, I like where Clevo has gone with this. I believe that performance notebooks should have small batteries to allow more flexibility with the real important aspects of engineering the notebook.

I see it there with more and more laptops, I don't think it's a good thing... if you have a case and it bomps the wall of the case, you could turn the laptop on in the case... and laptop + case + heat = bad.

I'm pretty sure when the lid is close the on/off switch is deactivated. You should only be able to turn the laptop on when the lid is open.

The M980NU has the power switch on the hinge. My first laptop that's it's been there. I don't have an issue with it there as it's not likely gonna be an issue even with the hinges.
Plus it's out of the way of me pressing the wrong button. Actually the little nephews pressing the wrong button cause I know I won't if it was on the front (unless I've had a few too many...) lol.

My point was more that if the volume of the battery bay wasn't appreciably less, there's a chance we could see a later battery with more cells, or possibly after-market batteries for a longer battery life. :)

the m980nu gets louder when you press the silence button (which downclocks the processor by 33%)

the clevo engineers who came up with that design should be fired, also the ones who still havn't be able to find a quiet fan for their processors and gpus should be shot.

How deep is the HDD bay on this guy? Those high-capacity 12.5mm tall HDDs would look very nice.
