    First
    M6400 Precision
    8GB ram
    upgraded to quadcore
    upgraded to FX 3800 Quadro
It did the job for a long while and was my entrance into the mobile workstation laptops.

    Current
    HP Zbook 17 G5
    8th gen I7
    32GB ram
    P5200
    512GB primary
    1TB secondary nvme
It is MXM, so hopefully I can eventually upgrade it to a better GPU but for now, it is fantastic. And it was only $950 usd.

    • 16gb DDR4 2133mhz
    • GTX 970m 3gb
    • 15.6" 1920x1080 (PWM )
    • 1tb 7200RPM Hitachi
    • Windows 10 Home

    Last: Clevo P870DM-G

    • Intel Core i7 6700k @ 4.0ghz
    • 16gb DDR4 2133mhz
    • GTX 1070 Mobile
    • 17.3" 1920x1080 75hz G-Sync Display
    • 2x Samsung 850 EVO, 1tb Samsung 870 QVO, 2tb 5400RPM Seagate
    • Windows 10 Home

May not seem like too much of a jump to some, but I'm still working on the Clevo and the CPU doesn't completely suck anymore. I also don't have any more headaches when using the laptop's screen :)

I remember the reason for me joining NBR way back was that I had an opportunity to visit the US and had been dreaming of buying an Alienware laptop. Long story short, I ended up moving here for good and the Alienware story was never meant to be. I've been on ASUS ROG machines since I arrived stateside.

I hopped here in 2011 because there was good Dell Precision chatter and I was looking to get the 2012 Dell Precision model, M6700, for my personal system. ...I got it at launch and it is still my primary personal system nearly 10 years later. I'm finally replacing it this year but NBR will never live to see that, it seems.

I came here with upgrade questions for my Compaq 2199US. The specs were:

    2.1GHz Amd Athlon 2800+ CPU
    512GB Memory
    40GB 4200RPM IDE Hard Drive
    15" 1024x768 LCD
    Windows XP OS

I preferred Windows 2000, so I downgraded it to Windows 2000. I eventually got 1GB of memory installed and bumped up to a 7200RPM hard drive. It seemed pretty cool at the time. The reason I stopped at NBR was to find out whether I could replace the standard CDRW/DVD drive with a DVD burner. With some trial and error, I finally managed to do it. I've been hanging out, helping where I can, ever since. I'll end with the notebook in my signature.

The first laptop I had was a Dell Inspiron 9400 / E1705 which I upgraded, can't remember the last specs, just that the GPU was an Nvidia 7900 GTX and the CPU a Core Duo T2700.

The last laptop is my custom built from parts Clevo P177SM-A
    i7 - 4940 MX
    32 GB of RAM
    3 TB of storage
    Nvidia Quadro P4200
The display kind of sucks, it's a FullHD - N173HGE-E11

In between, I had a Clevo M570TU, which still works and an Alienware M17x R2 which sucked.

My first and last Alienware laptop at NBR would be Alienware 15R2. I came in to ask the tech specs of SSD but decided to stick along after the dell thermal issues and never ending horrible repair stories.

I didn't have a laptop when I joined NBR; my reason for joining was to ask questions to help figure out which laptop to get. So at the time, I was using:

    Pentium 4 2.66 GHz Northwood
1 GB RAM (upgraded from the original 512 MB)
    GeForce 4 MX 440
    120 GB HDD
    XP Home

Thanks to NBR I wound up upgrading to a Dell Inspiron 1520, T7500 2.2 GHz dual-core, 2 GB DDR2, 8600M GT, and a whopping 160 GB HDD, 7200 RPM to boot. I still have that machine, with the CPU, RAM, and HDD all upgraded, and the operating system downgraded from Vista to XP and now dual-booting Mint. It was my only machine for 4.5 years, and my only laptop for 7.5. NBR definitely didn't lead me astray.

Last spec depends on whether you're considering my "main" system or my most recent laptop.

Most recent laptop is MSI GL63, 8750H 2.2 GHz hex-core, GTX 1050, 8 GB DDR4, 1.25 TB SSD, Win10. But I mostly use my desktop nowadays, which has Core i5-2500k, Radeon RX 480, 16 GB DDR4, 1 TB SSD, and 5 TB HDD (plus backup hard drives), Win8.1. They are a bit mismatched spec-wise; the laptop wins on CPU and memory bandwidth, the desktop wins on graphics and storage.

I came here having just upgraded my Thinkpad T43 to a T61p. I was soooo happy in 2008 to finally go 64bit!!

    Thinkpad T61p
    Core 2 Duo T9300 2.5Ghz
    nVidia Quadro fx 570m graphics
    8GB DDR2 (upgraded from original 2GB!!)
    2x100GB 7200rpm hdd
    DVD+RW
    14.1” 1400x1050 display
    Docking station
    Windows Vista Ultimate x64
    Windows XP x64 edition
    Fedora Linux 9 (Sulphur)

Windows XP x64 edition along with Windows NT 4.0 Workstation were the last Microsoft OSs that I liked. I pretty much went Mac and Linux later that year.

I ended up here on one of the last intel based macbooks:

    Apple MacBook Pro 16
    8 core 9880h 2.3Ghz
    Radeon 5600m graphics
    32GB DDR4
    1TB SSD
    16” 3072x1920 display
    macOS Catalina

    Asus ROG Strix B550I
    6 core AMD 5600X
    EVGA RTX 3060 Ti graphics
    16GB DDR4
    2TB + 1TB SSD
    Motif monument chassis
    34” ultrawide + 27” 1440p
    Fedora Linux 35

So long and thanks for the fish

Ah, before my M6700 I had this system's big brother, Inspiron 1720, which I had purchased in early 2008. I guess that is technically what I was using when I joined NBR. It was a great laptop for the day. I upgraded it to 6 GB RAM (beyond what Dell officially supported) and I think it had 1.5 TB of storage by the end (500GB+1TB HDDs), same 8600M GT GPU.

I considered the 1720! In the end, I went with the smaller sibling for portability, trading off not being able to add a second HDD, and the T7500 instead of the T7700 being the top-of-the-line CPU.

Many good memories with that laptop. Playing Trackmania while waiting for flights - a 50W dGPU gives you over an hour of playtime. Overclocking and undervolting it more than any computer I've had since then. I'm hoping to add a second hard drive to it later this year, thanks to some technological progress (including M.2 2242) since 2007.
