I've been hunting for a low-mid range gaming machine and I've been thinking about the np5160. The base model is spec'd with an i5 and 540m which I can find in laptops down to the $500 range yet I still feel more intrigued to buy a sager even though I've never purchased a Sager before. Does anyone else feel this way about sagers? Keep in mind, I've never owned a Sager before.
I hear about Sager's top notch build quality, but at the same time I hear about overheating issues, and speaker issues. It seems like they have pros/cons just like any other brand but they seem very popular at the same time..
For people who went with Sager over other brands, what's your overall feel towards their computers?
-
Love it. I'm on my 3rd Sager in about 9 years (due to technological obsolescence - all 3 laptops still run). But then again, the way in which I need to use this laptop is atypical.
In general, I think there are less overheating issues w/ Clevo/Sager than other brands. I cannot say this w/ other Sager/Clevo models, but the x7200 has an outstanding cooling system.
However, (again in general) the speakers do leave a little to be desired. The x7200 speakers are average at best, but that can be solved with a nice pair of headphones or external speakers. -
For my next laptop, I will probably choose another brand.
But that's only because I don't like sticking with just one brand.
Overall, my Clevo laptop is alright. I don't have many complaints. It works and it works at a good price point. But, like I said, I will probably try out another brand for my next laptop in 2 years or so. -
they are actually clevo laptops and sager is one of many resellers in the usa.
my m860tu is 3.5 years old and still going strong. i only found out about them from this forum after the nightmare i had with alienware.
i sure wont be going anywhere else and will when needed buy another clevo again. -
i dont know. ive owned an asus, acer,hp,toshiba. my new sager 8150 has the best speakers yet, best cooling yet. and best keyboard yet.
ive never not had buyers remorse and this is the first time i had no regrets. this laptop is awesome -
I love my Clevo D901C (almost 4 years old now!). The only problems I've ever had with it are problems that I largely created myself. None of these problems were the fault of Clevo/Sager. This is a rock-solid machine. I have put it through a lot of abuse and yet it still functions! It's still very fast, and I love it to pieces. However, its extreme weight and short battery life make it an unattractive option for carrying around a lot. Fortunately it rarely moves, so its goal as a 'Deskbook' is served quite well.
I have also referred a friend to get a Sager W870CU a while back, and he absolutely loves it. I warned him of the poor battery life, but he still doesn't care about that. It's a mobile desktop, and it has not had any problems at all. The only issues have been user-created or from AMD 5870m drivers. Again, not the fault of Clevo/Sager.
My next machine is going to be the Clevo P270WM. I know that for 100% certainty. I am very excited about it, too!
For a gaming machine or a machine that is packed with power, I would never look at any other brand besides Sager/Clevo. However, for my true portability needs (business environment for sure) I would go with Lenovo. Currently, I have a Lenovo x120e and I like it. It's not insanely fast, but it sure is portable, and its battery life is amazing. Excellent little thing for taking around. -
My experience with Clevo has always been very positive. Power, cooling, good price. And though I currently own an AW, my next laptop may be a Clevo, who knows. You won't go wrong with Clevo, 100%.

Im dealing with "Eurocom" right now with my CLevo P180hm..........I'll get back to this thread once I have a conclusion to my issue.

I'm on my second Sager and the common issues have been sound-related: The fans become obnoxious when heavy activity kicks them into high gear, and the max volume is way too low if using headphones (better bring something that will amplify the volume without creating distortion). Otherwise there's not much to complain about with solid build quality and premium-computing components at a competitive price.
Personal bias: They do need better port placement in future boards; having one USB on a side doesn't cut it. -
Sagers are built rock-solid, and are generally said to be cheap compared to the hardware it houses.
It is the best bang-for-the-buck, with a very good build quality. -
I havent got any clevo/sager yet. But I do have my eyes on the upcoming refresh models and most likely be buying the new 15" one from a reputable reseller. I have done quite the amount of research before getting a new laptop, and so far Clevo seems to satisfy me the most out of other brands. Looking forward to their new line of models.

I love my P150hm, but it's a little bigger then I'd like, and the battery life is sub par. As far as performance, the beast is unparalleled. But I'll probably buy a desktop next time instead of a powerful laptop, and get a small ultrabook to do my coding work (do I dare say 15" macbook air?)
-
I would like to buy a sager again, but my NP5793 now just had too many problems. My DVD drive died about 4 months after purchase. I barely used it. My right hinge literally broke in half so my monitor is standing on one hinge now. Worst of all is my 8800M GTX died right after my 1year warranty expired so I had to buy a 9800M GTS out of pocket to fix that. I would like to think that my model was just a bad batch, but I am not willing to take that bet at this point in time.
My next laptop may very well be an MSI, Lenovo, or Asus. -
My Sager will soon celebrate its 3rd birthday in April. I love it, and it served me well for a long time. The laptop brought me countless hours of entertainment, convenience and utility when I needed it to. It still works just fine. However, since I bought a desktop as my main computer, it had a diminished role for me since then. I use my 14 inch laptop on the go and desktop at home for the most part. My sager was a hybrid between those two, and now it is losing its niche. I probably won't buy Clevo anytime soon unless they release a semi portable model with some gaming capability. I know they have an ultrabook coming, but that's not what I'm looking for either.

I will be staying with Sager / Clevo. I have an NP8662 (see sig) that has become a folding machine (soon it will become a windows 8 beta test-bed much like my XPS m1710), and it still works, although the right-click has always been stiff (since day 1) and the "O" key has fallen out. It's not "fast" by the standards of i7's and fermi, but it's more than capable of getting the job done in an office or even for gaming at moderate settings.
I bought a NP8130 from PowerNotebooks (my 2nd purchase from his business, first was aforementioned NP8662) and I have nothing but good things to say about it. Granted it's not the 485m that I wanted, but that's not a knock on Sager so much as me having to wait longer than the card was available. The build quality is solid, the cooling is PHENOMENAL (it too folds 24/7), and it plays games at high / 45fps without fail. The only flaw with Sagers is the sound systems need to see Dr. MSI, but as others have said, a good external sound system or headphones will quickly rectify it.
Having used DELLS for 10 years before my NP8662, and having no problems with its replacement (NP8130), I don't see myself going anywhere insofar as other laptop companies for the foreseeable future. Bonus points that NEITHER laptop draws undue attention.

Bought two sagers and I have no intention of shifting brands. The best overall mobile experience I've had. And like many said, cheap compared to the specs your getting.
And for a 40 year old entrepreneur who loves to game, the look is ideal.

Got mine early December, i love how the build was done, fans are easy to clean, easy access to the parts and the resellers are great and very helpful
-
I wish Clevo would add a few extra features to their flagships (WiHD, mSATA, 2 headphone jacks instead of one, mobile broadband, etc). That would definitely "help" my decision in the future.
-
I can honestly say I have not been happier with a laptop purchase. I like how you can open it up and upgrade things with out voiding the warranty. I've changed out my HD, re-pasted CPU/GPU, re-installed windows/drivers and looked around a bit before closing it up. Made me feel in control and that I really made it mine. Also I have had a great time getting to know my machine. The build quality is that of a previous Lenovo I've owned and my gripes of the machine are only wishes and not deal breakers. Overall I dont think you can beat a Clevo price wise when it comes to performance. For a person like me who moves a lot and has to be flexible, I think this is a great compromise when it comes to needing/wanting desktop power and mobility.
-
Owned a lot of different brands (Asus, MSI, AW, HP, Dell...) but i always come back to a Clevo.
-
I think I might return to Sager if the P150EMs are any good.
I'll probably pick up a 17" with a 120Hz screen though, just for the kicks. -
ive just ordered one a clevo 170hm. reading all these im really pleased ive gone with them. sounds like a high end laptop.
coming from alienware m14x it really has made me realise how overpriced they are for what you get compared with these -
reading this thread is also very encouraging.. i'm on the verge of grabbing a 5160 or 5165 but i'm still trying to decide how important the upgrades on the 5165 are to me.. especially since it won't be my main computer as I have a desktop at home that I use mostly.
-
So Eurocom has had my laptop now "on the bench" going on day 3 and no response back to either email or phone calls. Should I be getting concerned? Unimpressed with their lack or updates or responses.................
-
Just ordered Sager NP8170 / Clevo P170HM. The draw? Ability to upgrade, change around components, sleek design. I've been using an Asus G74SX and love the keyboard, but could use more bang for my buck under the hood. The chassis is just a touch over the top for me, too. I'm really looking forward to a simple, clean design.
-
As they say, subtle has all the bells and whistles. -
-
Well Eurocom, finally got back to me. Sent an email giving me the impression that the laptop was working PERFECTLY. So I called up and finally got ahold of someone. Tech told me what I figured out originally. A faulty video card(Actually both of them). The annoying thing here is that this is what I diagnosed the problem as being originally. But these guys made me send back the entire laptop with my RAM, HD and windows 7 disk. At least I was able to convince them to flip for the return label both ways.

I have always like the power of my Sager's. My biggest complaint is warranty service. The bigger brands offer onsite next day options. There is nothing like that available for a Sager.
My 7280 had to be sent back for repair and to speed up the process I paid extra to overnight the machine each way. It was still out of my hands for a a week. That is tough to handle for a work machine.
If we could get onsite service options for this machine, I would buy again in a heartbeat. As it stands the next machine will most likely be a Dell/Alienware. -
So far, I'm happy with my purchase. Though there were a few things that made/make me uneasy. My machine was shipped about a week later than was estimated, and when it arrived, it was not exactly what I ordered. I had ordered a Malibal-badged 151, but received a generic 150 complete with the rubber texture and bigger power supply. Additionally, when I was reloading W7 onto my own Crucial M4, I was surprised to see in the BIOS that my Malibal's BIOS showed it to be a Eurocom Racer!
Hence, I have a very generic-looking machine that I can only hope Malibal will stand behind should something fail.
I'll be buying a laptop for my son this summer before he heads off to college. While a similar Clevo machine would fit the bill, I think I'll take the safer route with him and get a Lenovo WS520 or equivalent with onsite warranty. He can't afford to potentially waste time dealing with computer problems while in school and sports.

Anyway, back on topic, if it Sager could match the warranty of big vendors like Dell, HP, Lenovo and offer NBD services, I think the number of customers would skyrocket. -
-
To update my lil saga, 2 days ago I was told the laptop is now up and running and they are just making sure its stable with no hiccups............2 days later still no word back though on updates on when this process will be done or when the laptop will actually ship back.................thankfully my m18x came in yesterday. -
-
As for my Clevo P180HM, i had to call up this afternoon to get ahold of someone. Its supposedly rock solid and ready to ship back to me today..............crossing my fingers on that one...........Dealing with Eurocom has felt like pulling teeth to date.

I had some initial trouble with my MALIBAL P170HM because the video card was bad, but since it was fixed I love this laptop. It is the nicest overall quality laptop I have ever used or seen. A great blend of portability for a 17" (lighter than my last 15"), great display and high performance. I would buy the same basic laptop again if I had the choice.
-
I really like my Sager laptop. One of the things that sold me, was the placement of vents and how big they were. Also, the placement of the USB/HDMI/DVD-I ports. I like how it's in the back of the laptop and not on the side, as I always have my external monitor/TV hooked up to it.
I did have some initial problems with my first Sager laptop, but all is resolved and my second laptop (returned first one from issues and repurchased it) works great.
My biggest gripe is the sound quality sucks. I wish it was more on par with my Altec Lansing HP laptop. Also the Numpad, even though I've gotten used to it, the different placement of the period button, still slows me down when using it.
Hard to say if I will buy it again or not, I have to see what else is new and comparable to Sager/Clevos at the time of buying. -
With sager's you're generally going to be mailing your machine back for repairs (unless they ship you parts). What kind of turn around times have you guys experienced?
-
A couple of years ago, a colleague had one which developed a faulty drive controller. Overnighted to Sager. Took about a 4 more days until it was back in our hands. IIRC a day or two to repair and a day to ship back. Since this went to Sager in CA, and we're in the midwest (east of the Mississip), that didn't seem too bad.
-
From when I send my laptop in to when I receive my laptop back, it was around a week. Sager is roughly 5-6 hours away from me, I live in central Cali. I have heard that they would send you parts, some people have replaced their screen/memory that way.
-
This is my 1st Sager (NP8150) and I'm quite happy with it. I almost bought a Sager 3 years ago, but didn't know much about them then. Now I would include them in my list to consider. So far it's been running great and haven't had any problems other than a driver or two.
Mike -
This is the first Sager I purchased and I am very pleased with it. My last notebook was from HP and at first it was great, dual core process, 4GB of RAM and an NVIDIA integrated card with 512MB. I found that Vista never really seemed to work properly, it was bloated and just kept performing slower and slower. As an example, it takes no less that 10 minutes to fully boot the notebook. My Sager boots in less than 15 seconds! Ya, I am very happy with Sager and will probably use them in the future.
-
I will wont get anything but a clevo now! I havent sent my laptop back ever, the build quality is amazing. the only thing i dont like is the rubberized finish, how can u scroll a blunt on it, it's impossible!
-
This is my first Sager and will definitely not be my last. I am very impressed with the attention to detail and the build quality of these machines, but more importantly, the customization that you can get without any effort.
Everything about this machine screams quality, and you can pack some pretty impressive specs into any of the chassis available to you. I would say they probably rank best-on-class for any line of chassis available, if not the best.
Honestly, you can't go wrong with this brand. Pick a good reseller and you are good to go.
For Sager owners... what's your overall feel towards your computer? Would you have bought a different brand?
