I'm using Nvidia Inspector to overclock my gtx 780m and notice that when I set clocks (+135, +500) and play bf3 for example the fps will go from 80-90 and straight to 1-5 for like half a second. It's like a huge stutter that happens every couple minutes. Why is this? I hear others overclocking there 780m just fine. My temperatures have never gotten to 92°. Please help me fix this issue or explain what this is. I'm on the 180w power supply as well. Thanks in advance for any information.

Whats probably happening is you're seeing your GPU throttle. 92C is the throttle point of the 780M so what I would guess is happening is that its hitting 93C, throttling causing your FPS drop and that throttle is why you dont see it go over 92C. You'll prob need to set you OC down a littlebit.

The 180W power supply doesn't have enough power to let the 780M overclock. To overclock, you need to gett a higher wattage AC adaptor. Which may require buying an adaptor and modifying the plug so it fits your laptop.

Yea, I am thinking it's your PSU limiting it.

If you go over the power limit the PSU will shut down for a moment in a fail-safe at which point the laptop switches to using battery and tries to go back to psu and is causing the FPS dip.

What if you just do 100 on the clock and leave memory alone? Memory speed increase will do very little in terms of FPS on a game and also can risk damage due to heat/stress a lot more then say the GPU itself. It's generally safer to OC CPU/GPU vs. memory. A processor is much more forgiving to abuse vs. ram...

I play on an external monitor with laptop monitor disabled (saves even more power lol) and have no issues OC my 780m 100MHz.
I also have the 45W cpu and 4 sticks of ram and a number of USB devices. So you should at least be able to run 100MHz.

If you have the stock video bios then it's likely the 110W limit of the card rather than the brick itself that's kicking in.

I thought htwingnut found he could overclock when he upgraded the power brick. It is in his np8255 or np8265 review thread, with info on his modified brick.
