I have an issue with my M570RU (Vista x64 SP1), where the machine commonly refuses to shut down when I hit the "shut down" button and in fact restarts. Sometimes it does this 3 to 4 times in a row before it finally shuts down. I have no idea why or how it does this. Any suggestions or solutions?

    Thanks.

It might be a bug with your beta SP1 pack.

    Nah, it happened occasionally pre-SP1.

You have got to be kidding me with blaming SP1. A pre-alfa would do that, not a RC. Anyway, I believe it may have something to do with you reinstalling Vista :).

Well I'm not running Vista. Still on XP BUT
I can tell what the problem would be with XP and I suspect that the problem
is the same for your Vista.
WHen an XP system restarts automatically instead of shutting down it is
because it is actually crashing during shutdown.
Generally this is a device driver problem during shutdown.
In XP you have to do the following to fix this.
    Start->Control Panel->System
(alternately right click on my computer and select properties)

Now Under the System properties box that comes up select the
Advanced tab then the Settings button under the "Startup and Recovery"
Under the section for "System failure" there is a check box for
    "Automatically restart"

This box normally allows windows to recover from unexpected but non fatal errors
    BUT
IF you are having a crash on shutdown this same box will cause your system to
restart automatically instead of shutting down.

To find out what the error is you need to uncheck the box and shutdown.
Now instead of restarting you will get a crash message.
Note the crash message should also be logged in the event log which you can check out with the event viewer.

OK now all you have to do is figure out where in Vista that same setting is.
I can't help you there since I'm not running Vista as stated before.
Once you figure out what is causing the crash you can recheck the box.
    "Normally" it should be checked.
IF it is drivers (which I suspect) try uninstalling them / re-installing them or better
upgrade them to a newer version.

[EDIT] 1/16/2008 when I wrote "fix it" I didn't mean fix the crashing. I meant to provide you with a reason why the system was restarting instead of shutting down and a way to find out what is causing the crashing (ie is it a driver or what...) by stopping the auto-restarting. To REALLY FIX IT you will have to take that info and resolve the driver problem or whatever is causing the crashing).
