So yesterday Vivian from HIDevolution sent me an email asking me how to get the RAM to work on this laptops since I keep on switching RAM every other week......

She said that when she installs the 2800 MHz. RAM, the system doesn't boot.

I told her to do an NVRAM reset, then try one module at a time, no luck, it only beets on the default DIMM Profile which is 2400 MHz. but if she tries XMP Profile 1/2, it won't boot. I then suggested her to try a manual overclock by choosing custom profile and choosing memory ratio = 14, that didn't work as well. Not even ratio 13 worked.

She then tried the 2666 MHz. RAM and it worked right away.

That same 2800 MHz. RAM Kit works on every other P870DM laptop which is very puzzling since they all have the Prema BIOS and the Prema BIOS supports up to 3200 MHz.

    Any ideas?

I really wouldn't know, haven't had access to a P7XXDM system. But it might as well be a limitation of the board?

Prema will be the best one to answer since he knows these systems on a hardware level.

yeah we were puzzled as the BIOS is very similar but it seems like this is a hardware limitation because even manually choosing an overclocked memory ratio didn't work.

Might wanna post in the P7XXDM owners thread as well, if someone using anything 2666Mhz + RAM. I think @godfafa_kr has the P750DM-G, he might have tried something.

What would shed light is @Mr. Fox 's thread here and on tech inferno "not all ram is created equal." I believe he has a similar issue on his panther and had to use taiphoon burner to loosen the stepping inside the timing slightly to get it to work. There are about 5-6 steps inside of each timing within what we normally play with. Changing those in taiphoon burner allows for more control, as otherwise it is just barely off on the timing and won't work. Just a thought! :)

Also, the voltage set on the imc of the xmp profile may not work with this model and needs modified to actually run the xmp timings.

Isnt the voltage standard for SODIMMS in these desktop replacements @ 1.2V these days?

You're talking about the voltage to the ram stick. Inside the xmp profile, sodimms contain two voltages, the one you just mentioned and the one telling the memory controller what to run at. Also, XMP uses the overclock voltage. For example, because I don't know DDR4 off the top of my head, DDR3 has 1.35, 1.5, and 1.65, the last being the xmp voltage for overclocking the ram higher. 1.2 is like 1.5 on ddr3. I'm discussing the memory controller voltage, not that voltage. It could be hardware specific (this laptop only), or the line of p7xxdm cannot use the same imc voltage as other laptops, such as the 870. I'm taking it that it is pushing the voltage properly and doesn't have a different voltage droop, which may not be within your control on these uefi.

this is too complicated, I wished it worked out of the box like in the P870DM, unless I have that system in front of me, I cannot help them to make it run

I hear you. It took me some playing to get used to and understand taiphoon burner and the timings. In fact, I'm still playing and learning. Many of the settings I mentioned can be changed in high end OC boards. I've modified the spd one time to auto clock to 2400 on my ddr3. Meanwhile, Mr. Fox and others have played with the program more than I have, so might have better ideas on adjustments or what to try. I'm just giving a bit of what I know or have read...

Yeah, i remember that about the DDR3 profiles, just didnt think they stuck to it for laptop memory as well.
I guess that might actually end up being the cause.

@Phoenix Did you ask her what modules they tried in those laptops? Also its better to try native 2400/2666/2800/3000 mhz modules, rather than trying to OC them or to force them to run at non standard clocks.
As pointed earlier, a lot of modules are super finicky.

she tried the G.Skill 2800 MHz. RAM (same ones like the ones I am selling you), that didn't work no matter what, then she tried the G.Skill 2666 MHz. modules, they worked right away at the advertised speed after choosing XMP Profile 1

How many machines/CPUs is this impacting? Some will not have a memory controller capable of the higher speeds most likely as intel does not bin for it.

If you are going to be overclocking ram or IMCs really you should be able to troubleshoot this sort of issue.

the entire P770/P750DM is not compatible with this RAM. Not talking about overclocking here, they aren't running at the default XMP Profile which the RAM is capable of. Only the P870DM can handle 2800MHz + speeds it seems

You are overclocking the IMC/memory interface by running faster memory than intel officially supports.

It's probably nothing more than the SPD configuration doesn't place nice with the model in question. The machine most likely has the capacity and the problem is likely compatibility. All it takes is for one value to be off by just enough to prevent the BIOS from recognizing the modules and configuring itself correctly to render the sticks unbootable. Vivian should try another brand that works and not offer the G.SKILL option to customers that purchase that model. It is probably fixable with Thaiphoon Burner, but having to do that is not a good option for a company in the business of selling products that should function correctly right out of the box.

Remember, I had Kingston HyperX Impact DDR4-2800 modules that were not bootable in the Sky X9, but setting the timings manually in the BIOS worked and so did overclocking DDR4-2400 to 2800. @KKthebeast has Kingston DDR3L-2133 sticks that won't boot in his M18xR2 and yet the Corsair Vengeance DDR3L-2133 modules worked fine for me. Those same Corsair 2133 sticks that worked fine in the M18xR2 were not bootable in the M18xR1, but the Kingston HyperX PnP 2133 were bootable and ran fine in the M18xR1.

Manually setting timings if you can is always better in my experience.

I agree 100% where that is possible. If the machine will not post with certain modules, it can be kind of tricky to apply manual settings, and it definitely would not be a good idea for a vendor to sell a new machine with memory modules that are not bootable with BIOS defaults.

Finally got them to plug and play + boot but only at 1866mhz. AND using Swick's Modded BIOS... As per the dev of Typhoon. He said to get to 2133mhz program to 1866 and to use the XMP Profiles @ 2133... Which still aren't working. All tools I can find to inspect the Kingston modules say that they are 2000mhz sticks. I don't know if that's a glitch or what it is referring to exactly. Yet after programming the XMP to 2133 (and trying your tweak to raise the registered speed 1, 2, also tried -1, -2, +3, +4) the bios just hange BUT then reverts to 1866 w/ XMP set to off again. It's a start. Could use some help if someone has some ideas :)

I don't know if I told you Mr. Fox but before I got the Kingston Modules I actually bought and RMA 2x sets of 4 x 8gb stick of Corsair Vengeance DDR3L-2133 for the exact same issue. No Post. (This was before I had every heard of Typhoon)
