My GPU has started overheating, hitting 85-90C and throttling down. I pulled the heatsink off, which was full of lint, cleaned the contacts, re-applied The Chill Factor thermal grease, spread with a card for a nice thin layer, screwed the heatsink back in in number order, retested, and I'm still getting 85-90C temps. CPU is doing great, at about 40C under gaming load. Fans on full, of course.
Tried 179.24 drivers and 180.84, same results.
Running stock clocks right now. Its running about 30C too high.
-
what did you get running the stock driver?
-
Same thing with stock driver. Seems more like a hardware issue.
-
is there any way you can take the cover off to make sure that all fans are really spinning?
-
I'm actually testing with the cover off and my zalman cooler blasting everything. Fans are spinning full.
-
ok. so what happens if you drop the clocks to 200/100/300? do the temps even act like they want to drop or do they stay in the 50 to 60 range?
-
Well if I unplug from AC, they drop down to perfect temps, around 36C.
-
Try putting on Powermizer on AC power if you have it off.
-
Got the same version of card (GPU-Z) as you emike so it will be intresting to see what happens. Get around 77 max (no overclock) when playing Crysis Wars for 30mins plus.
Was gonna suggest taking a look at the dust build up and then the GPU fan but looks like thats all been looked at. Well hopefully things go alright and you manage to get it sorted ok. -
Well Xotic says I've already done more than they recommend, and are going to send an advanced replacement.
-
Try to do some lapping on the cooler's base... try with some car polish. It can help lowering the temperatures 1/3ºC.
Check if the base of the cooler is in good contact with the GPU core. Check if the presure is not uniform, and if you need to, bend slightly and carefully the headpipes to adjust and optimize the pressure.
-
Well I'll tinker around with it some more, Audigy. I think its got good contact, the heatsink fins register 83C with the laser thermometer, I'd assume with them that hot, they ought to have good contact. Either way, a new GPU for me
-
and you will more than likely get an 0617 clocked at 500/799/1250 1.05v
-
Isn't the 9800 gtx supposed to work upto 105 degrees? I mean of course if until now you were getting 50-60 degrees and all of a sudden you are getting 90 is something to look into but is not really an alarming temperature for such a card I think. I'm not even sure why it downclocks since the downclocking is set usually at above 100.
-
yes, but do you want your card running that high in temps on a regular basis??
-
TJMax on the 9800M GTX is 95C, so a constant 90C is just a little too much!
-
you got me there.
not sure about all that tjmax stuff since i ran it up to 103 to see if it would shut off.
all it does is down clock. -
Plus even if it never hits that 95 and downclocks, I don't see the card lasting as long at 90 all the time so its good to get it changed while you can.
I hit fn+1 for max fans every time before gaming. Who cares if its louder, just turn the speakers up a bit.
-
My sennheisers drown out all the fans
If I could add more fans, I would!
