Get new thermal pads(see link by Ekulz) and if they don't work do the oven trick.
    Best of luck :)

Time to add one more victim to the list... :(

The exact same problems as Ekulz started happening to me 2 days ago. This is what happens to my display before my computer locks up:

    http://i.imgur.com/4WUN5ZL.jpg

The display re-arranges the way my desktop looks, it's really disorienting moving the mouse around when it happens. And those horizontal lines flicker in and out everywhere. Eventually the screen will turn into predominantly a single color with thick, dark vertical lines appearing every 100 pixels or so. That's when my computer locks up.

I purchased 1 year warranty on my laptop, a shame to think that if I had bought 2 years I would still be covered. I contacted Malibal (who have backed out of NBR after some drama last year... just my luck) who would replace the GPU with another 6990m for a steep price. I don't think that's a reasonable option for me, so I'm wondering what should I do now? Should I wait for the 8970M/GTX 780Ms to show up and then make a decision? I see that Eurocom is selling 7970M kits with the correct vBIOS pre-flashed, and there's proof from one user on NBR that it not only worked in his P150HM, but HDMI out also worked. :D For approximately the same amount of money that Malibal was asking, I could attempt a DIY and hope that the issues go away.

Just wait till at least end of this month.
The HDMI if you read that link does not work on 7970m. I would go with either of the following 7970m/680m or 780m the last one on the premise that prema/myth can come up with a BIOS that will work with our HM series notebooks. I am hoping this is the case but if not I will fall back on a 680m as this has everything working including hdmi but you need to modify the drivers.

yep, even tho its true that ONE single user here on nbr has got his hdmi working with a 7970m on a p150hm machine. weve tried sorting out the reason for that, but couldnt find a solution. stood to reason he had a specially modified vbios but flashin that onto another user's gpu did not result in a functioning hdmi.very strange...

    So...

Almost like clockwerk it seems my 6990M fried tonight as well.
I've owned this awesome machine for almost 2 years now with almost no problems.

I took good care of the notebook But the past few days Ive felt my GPU get hotter and bug my display more.
After it would bug, I figured it got too hot so I would turn the laptop off and let it cool down, maybe thermal paste needed to be renewed idk, but then today while playing a game it bugged, flashed a white light, then I had to force shut-down.
I watch my temps through GPU-z and they are normally in the high 70s-80s during long gaming sessions and 51-53 idle, but its only been this way the past 3 or 4 days.
I seriously hope its not cooked but thats the conclusion I came too. I really almost predicted this GPU would kick around this time.

Windows wont start now, it black screens. When I access Safe Mode, and even during normal start-up attemps there are green horizontal lines present on the screen, but I know the LCD is fine. Is the GPU in VGA mode?

The past couple months have thrown several series of misfortune my way but this takes the cake /cry.. Just when I was starting to see a brighter future haha jk, just a bump in the road.

    What are my options?

    RMA? Pay for new GPU?

Im probably going to buy a desktop rig for gaming/professional home use, and save up a bit for a notebook later.
    Where should I start?

SHOUTOUT! to all the Clevo/Sager suppliers, especially Powernotebooks, Xotic, and Mythlogic! :)

If its in warranty then send in an RMA request, if not it's an excellent excuse to look for a 680M or 780M once the bios mods are done ;)

    Another update:
Card is still going strong. I think i've had only one failure since I last replied in June. I purchased a new thermal paste - "DeepCool Z5". Temps are pretty good still. This time I applied a much smaller amount and it still works fine. I have a feeling maybe I was applying too much and it was squeezing around around all the small metal bits that surround the chip and ruining them, I don't know.

Temps don't pass 79C under load, idle around 42-45 (starting to turn into summer here getting hotter). Played BF4 today for about an hour ran quite nicely. However I could only run it on medium-low :(

    Good to hear dude.
My recommendation is id7. Used it once and never had to touch gpu and cpu ever again. It's an amazing thermal paste and my idle temps speak for themselves 28c-32c idle on 680m & 7970m with about 66c max on load gaming Crysis 3 half an hour.

How in the h3ll are you all getting such low temperatures? Using Prolimatech PK-1 my 680m hits 82C for 3dmark and over 90C for furmark. The 6990M that died on me was always above 90C. Room temperature is 25C

Sounds like either your heatsink is not quite flat or your paste job needs re-doing.

Hey I just got a cheap and unused 150HMx with a 69990m and was wondering to preempt these problems of overheating etc if i should just swap over the heat pad straight away, do you recommend the 1mm pads? also there is talk over over tightening the xclamps? seeing how much of a diva this card is how tight is too tight!?

    Thanks

It's a physical problem with the card itself rather than a cooling issue, but you can use the 1.5mm, 1mm and 0.5mm pads around the card as needed if you want to make the cooling as efficient as possible.

Well it looks like I've finally lost the battle with my 6990m. After many, many oven bakes it looks like it's not working.
Got the usual symptoms the other night, grey screen and wouldn't boot back up past the windows logo. Safe mode etc worked fine. Baked it, it worked as usual, then windows froze and had to hard reboot and now all I get is a black screen. No bios screen or windows logo or anything.

I tried baking it again and still the same problems. I tried with a couple of external monitors with no luck. I knew my luck had to run out at some point...

At this point in time I'm only looking to get the laptop working for the rest of the year. Probably looking at downgrading, as I'm not willing to spend the money on a 7970m or 680m. Could anyone provide me with a suitable card for a reasonable price? Hardly game anymore, final year of university it's more being used for studies. Would prefer something that's an easy install, but I'm comfortable flashing my bios if needed. I can't seem to find any listings on ebay.
Obviously i'd rather spend 300 for a crappy card rather than 500 for a crappy cheap laptop that will annoy the hell out of me.

To sellers: Does anyone stock anything lower than a 7970m or 680m anymore? Or am I out of luck..

Yeah baking is only a temporary fix, it will eventually stop working, and really should only be used to get data off a computer before real repairs are performed.

Hooray my new GTX 670M arrived! I know its not as powerful as my 6990m but it should be nice and stable to last me until the end of the year.

Installed it but my bios seems to be out of date or something. It isn't recognising the card, the nvidia installation failed and GPU-Z is showing something about it running on the windows drivers. Could anyone guide me on how to fix this?

HM series never had GTX 6xx cards so you'll need a modified driver for that card. Either try if the modded driver + inf from the gtx680m works (there's a thread about gpu upgrades on hm series somewhere) or google for a modded driver, I suppose the site was called something like laptopvideo2go.

Ended up being one of the ram sticks was dead. 670m has been running pretty well the past few days, except for a couple of problems:
    1. I can't change the brightness through the fn + f6 shortcut or through the windows power management sliders. Tried multiple drivers.
    2. Sometimes the gpu clocks don't speed up when opening a game, most notably in league of legends. I'm monitoring the core clock and it's staying at around 75mhz instead of running at its full potential. For about half the game it will do this and my frame rate will be around 25-30 fps, then suddenly the clock speeds go up and im over 60 fps. Whats going on?
