    Just to get this straight.
I keep reading that those cards are not compatible with LVDS and only work with eDP, yet I read that people have no issues whatsoever to run them in their p150sm / p170sm notebooks, they are literally plug and play with minor heatsink mods.

So the reason for this is that those cards do not direcly support LVDS but they still work fine in LVDS systems provided those systems have optimus?

It depends on the model but retrofits that work are either working because

    A) the laptop has optimus switchable graphics, which can 'translate' the dGPU output to LVDS panel.

    Or

    B) you buy a new screen and cable which use an eDP port on the motherboard instead (as I had to with my P370EM, which doesn't have the intel iGPU connected)

So basicially the requirements are either eDP with 120hz panel or LVDS with optimus?
I don't think notebooks like P150sm or P170SM have an eDP port on the mainboard. Correct me if I'm wrong.

According to the polish thread it works without any issues but you have to do some heatsink mods. He also said throttling doesn't work and he said that he is certain that the card will work in any 1.xx SM-A system provided it has prema mod.

In an optimus machine the IGP sends rendering commands to the GPU which sends back a completed frame to the IGP's memory (usually the ram), this is then output by the IGP to the display. In this case the dGPU has no connection to the internal panel and so the needs of the dGPU output are totally irrelevant.
