So I heard this card is crusing around the internet and some made a successful build into an older notebook.
Now what I read is that the card needs a model with a 120hz monitor, is that true or is that only true for specific versions of the card?
I'd appreciate any input on this matter, since I'm interested iin knowing if you can upgrade to a GTX 1060 with a normal 60hz monitor.

The 1060 doesn't require a 120Hz panel on any of the current systems. I don't know what you read about this otherwise regarding older systems. Do you have a link to what you found earlier?

That's only for an alienware that had a 120hz panel connected via the EDP port or a 60hz via LVDS.
The 1060 card can't do LVDS only eDP which is the real issue here.
You need to find out how your laptop connects its screen or if it has Optimus which can bypass this issue (iGPU translates card output to LVDS port)
@woodzstack would be better able to advise on compatibility -

yeah we have 2 different 1060N/NN that fit and work and we have 2 different 1070N/NN that would work. Though of the later the one that is regular size is delayed still. The former of the 1070N requires moddingof the chassis to fit, because MSI decided that if NVidia wasn;t enforcing the standard anymore, it would let all the ODM's design thier own proprietary designs like ASUS always does.

Nvidia never enforced the standard, they just offered a reference design.

Gotcha, so basicially since my notebook is a clevo that connects the screen via the onboard graphics I won't have issues upgrading.
Didn't know that Alienware actually connected their dGPU to the screen. Interesting move, I mean it would make it possible to use neat features like scaling but the upgrade part would be a pain.
There is a GTX 1070 version that has regular form factor? (without that weird part on the side sticking out, forcing to do case modding) -

120hz required the direct connection.
