looks like an overclocked GTX 280M. no GTX 380M in sight.. yet.

Yeah, its not exactly an earth shattering refresh.
-
nah its just a clocked up 280
clocks that i can get on my 280's anyway...
nothing exciting -

Exactly
573-->600 Core
and 1483-->1500 Memory
Wow, gonna set the earth alight there...
5870s or the next Nvidia GPUs which might be announced Cebit are the only things that interest me on this side, the GTX285 is far too much of a miniscule step up to want to upgrade to, it's not like they've even increased the shader counts like previous refreshes. -
what's the point of this product then? a temp solution to crash 5870's party?
-
According to those numbers, the 285M is 2% faster than the 280M (all at stock). The 5870 is about 25-26% faster then the 280M... I doubt the new 285M will make any difference. I suppose they just figured out that the 280M can easily work at higher clocks and they said... why not then?
-
I don't think it is as simple as that because Nvidia would have needed to guarantee stability. I have heard quite a few original GTX280M users who couldn't get stability at the GTX 285M's clocks.
-
factory hand picked and pushed to the limit tested chips maybe?
-
That makes sense but I do wonder if everything is exactly the same as the GTX280M. I thought some one speculated that the 285M had a different type of memory in it.
I wonder if I will notice any difference when comparing the GTX285M's performance to the GTX260M. I estimate a 12% increase in performance lol. -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Correct. These are select samples that can remain stable at their factory clocks of 576/1500/1020. To keep the 75W TDP rating, Nvidia most likely kept the voltage at 1v as well, meaning that this card can still overclock very well. It's good for me because I like overclocking by straight multiples; 680/1700/1020 will be my target for this card when I pick it up next week. -
what i realize from the specs is that the chips are not at all 40nm derivatives, so they are a product of a mature 55nm production line. if the production is getting better and more mature to yield enough GTX 285M for the market, does this mean the end of life for GTX 280M in the near future?

This has been a paper release for SEVERAL MONTHS. I cannot understand nVidia's logic because within 2 months the one that REALLY matters comes out...from what I was told.

Here are some benchmarks from the 285M FYI
I also attached a comparison table to the 280M on the 8760 and 8690.

Thanks Justin, when were you going to add this card to your Sagers? Although a very small performance difference.

The announcement will come very shortly
er...very, very shortly... -

GTX 285M has been out for about a week now, I think I posted the stock specs up on nbr when we had our shipment in last week but can't find it - they are a little different to the specs in OP post:
GPU - 600MHz
RAM - 1000MHz
Shader - 1500MHz
Can't speak for other companies but we have moved up from 280 to 285, so we won't see any more 280Ms. -

Expected to launch on Friday.

guess your site has not been updated with the GTX 285M. still seeing both G860,870 with 280M
-
as expected, GTX280M is nearing the EOL. most companies will soon be shipping GTX 285M instead of 280M.
-
Neil@Kobalt Company Representative
Yup, we are shipping but the website hasn't been updated yet - the cards came in a little earlier than expected and our website guy hasn't got round to updating it yet..... -
cheers. thanks for the clarification. guys, if you are in the market for a new W860/870, kobalt has confirmed shipping with 285M.
-
600/1500/1000 is a good start.
If these chips are for real, 700/1750/1100 should be cake! -
Great, my new NP9280 from xoticpc just shipped yesterday!
-
The cards are useless IMHO, they will still be behind the 4870s, not even talking about the 5870s. After switching from 280s got a 3k Vantage difference with stock drivers.
-
Consider the next gen GF100 will be GeForce GTX 470/480, on the desktop side - I wouldn't be surprised if NV milks those basically re-re-re-branded card yet again, before unleashing the true next gen card. (8800m>9800m>280m>285m>380m?>The ONE)
If they do it, I won't be shocked, I'd just start LMAO.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
GTX 480M?
-
Well from What I see there is abou 4% performance boost in synthetic benchmarks and very nice 10%-15% of real Gaming performance. And this is very good.... almost difference between GTX 260M vs GTX 280M. HM???
-
They're making a Matrix Rebranded?
-
This is likely an accurate representation.
-
Is there a review of the 285 that you are referring to for the real Gaming performance?
-
Sure, its listed couple posts back. http://forum.notebookreview.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=44389&d=1265219976

Here is a link to a few posts back on some benchmarks on the 285M FYI. -
Wow, can't believe I missed that. I need sleep I guess.
Thanks! -
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
Justin, if you wouldn't mind will you let us know what these cards can be comfortably overclocked at so we can compare that to the 280M? We would appreciate it.

Hi guys, so in your opinon:
285m or 5870 ?? -
Well if the 5870 lives up to the hype and if it is available for resale then I would probably look to grab it. However, those are some "if's" that need to be seen.
-
Ah thanks, what do you mean by resale ?
When will we find out what the 5870 can do ?
I want to buy a sager with the new 285M but will hold out for the 5 seires laptop if its going to be most likely better and released within the next month.
Thanks for all your help in advance guys. -
I don't know guys, Clevo has yet to go back to ATI since the 3870 issue, and I don't see the resellers talking about the 5870. I'm still not convinced the 5870 is coming to Clevo machines.
-
Are you just talking high-end? Because Clevo does have 15.6" and 17.3" i7-quad systems using the ATI Mob HD4570.
-
Yeah just on the high-end. Nothing else exists in my world.
-
Sorry I think I should clarify. I mean would you reccommend getting a Sager with the 285m OR getting a different laptop sager or otherwise with a 5870? i.e the new MSI.
The only reason im moving towards the sager is I hear it doesnt throttle and I thought that the 285M would be awesome. -
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Well I hope they do unless they insist on waiting for the 380 as the 5870m should have a respectable performance lead, given my experiences with my brother's 5750, and two of them should be very nice, offering higher performance, lower core heat and power use, and more features over a GTX285m SLI setup.
Dependant on GDDR5 and cost of course. It seems likely Clevo havent confirmed one way or another what they will use so most vendors are keeping quiet til official news, possibly at the Cebit event. -
So the short asnwer is that I should find laptop with the 5870 ? as it is superior to the 285m ?
-
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
From what we know now the 5870 is superior.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
Nice!
Not the biggest performance boost but I'll take it. -
As the 5870 is a better card, what sort of price difference do people think it will be from the 285m?
-
5870 will probably be cheaper, maybe substantially, based on previous pricing.
-
I second that.
-
In that case I might consider buying, although I'm not too familier with ATI's driver updates.
-
Considering I ordered my G870 from kobalt computers on 1/28 and the above post was made on 2/3 - what are the chances that my original order containing a 280m got upgraded to a 285m without my knowledge? *crosses fingers*
I'll probably call them tomorrow morning as I'm too impatient to wait for a PM reply from Neil (not saying he's slow at those, just saying that I don't want to wait until tomorrow afternoon...) and find out then - considering my laptop delivery got delayed until next Tuesday, that would be a nice little compensation
GTX 285M Officially out!
