I did a brief search and I didn't find anything, and I figured somebody else with 485m on 8150 may encounter the same problem so I will just post it here.

The gfx card was not overheating, the highest temperature it reaches when I play gw2 was not even 75 C. Here is what happens:

The screen will freeze first, and the audio will generate static sound. Then purple stripes of pixels will show up, overlaying with game graphic. Sometimes even cover the whole screen, and then the screen will turn black. Sometimes it will recover from this crash, and gw2 will tell me that it has encountered a video driver problem. Other time it's completely stuck in the black screen with static sound, and I need to hard reset the laptop.

This happens the most when I play games, it rarely crashes when I just watch youtube videos etc, and even if it crashes it recovers really fast.

If it is my graphic card's problem, I think I might as well upgrade the graphic card to 580m, since it has the same power consumption and gfx card for clevo model is easier to find. Any idea on that?

    Thanks in advance.

I would get a 680m if i were you, the 580m is only about 7% faster than the 485m, the 680m is more than twice as fast i would say. Or get a 7970m thats flashed from a reseller.

Forgive my ignorance on this subject, but would his laptop be able to meet the voltage requirements for the 680M?

I am only asking because I recall Meaker attempting the upgrade of the graphics card on his old 16F2 that originally came equipped with a 560M. He bumped it to the 7970M and when he stressed it, it would shut down if I recall due to the voltage requirements. Granted, his was an MSI so it is a little bit of a different beast than the Sager/Clevo but I am curious of the mainboard would be able to handle it.

As far as the 485M issues, it sounds like the card is conking out on you, I would recommend getting an RMA if it is under warranty.

IIRC it was only the 30 series (EG NP8130) that had reduced power capabilities while the 50 series was consistent regardless of the card.

yup thats correct :) np8150 handles the 100w cards without any problems. altho i must admit that my 180w psu gives out when i OC my 7970m and run prime95/furmark at the same time on a modded system bios with upped cpu turbo boost power limits  :D

Awesome, I will be adding that to my own notes. :)

We don't really get a chance to mess with upgrading an old system with a new card as you can imagine. :(

A little light onto the GPU problem itself, I've been experiencing the same problem on the 280 series. My case is on a desktop where I have them running in SLI rather than your mobile versions but it appears that it has little to do with the case itself. It's a pretty common problem unfortunately and as far as I can tell no fix. There have been users online that have reported rolling back to older drivers fixes the problem, others claim to do a clean install of the latest drivers, and some involve doing a weird dance around a rain stick. I tend to see it happen when I'm tasking the CPU while utilizing the GPU whether it be in games or HD video. From what I've researched in the year or so since these problems started occurring to me, there is no real fix other than a new GPU like you've already mentioned. I have run across one person claiming that there is a script that you can put into a specific directory that fixes the problem but any attempt to get the script off of them resulted in no answer.

I upgraded my P170HM from a GTX 485M to a GTX 680M, not only does it idle a few Centigrade cooler, max temps are anywhere from 10-20 C cooler too. The performance difference is astronomical and my laptop no longer feels like much of a compromise.

Now that I have fluorescent keyboard stickers, I no longer crave that back-lit screen either.

Thank you guys for all the responses.

I'd buy the 680m as well if I had the budget, but the cost is too high as I saw on ebay (900 - 1000 USD). So I'm planning to buy the 675m ( 400 - 500 USD), which is the 6th gen's equivalent of 580m. any thought?

i saw one on ebay for 600, so if you can wait i would get that, or i would get the 7970m for 425 from a reseller.

the first thing you should is test on different games and drivers.
if the problem persists or a deadset on getting a new gpu i wouldnt suggest getting the 675 which is nothing more than an overclocked 580.
i think the only worthwhile upgrades for the 485 are the 7970 and 680.

    Will do Derek!

Yes you are right about the worthawhile part, however, I do have a serious budget problem( 680m is almost $800 just the card on ebay right now, let alone the upgrade kit. Note that when I checked it two week ago, it was still almost 900. The depreciation is too fast as it's still a relatively new card) and I just got a deal for a complete 675m upgrade kit + the heat sink for $450. If I don't have money problem 680m would be my pick as well. On top of that, I'm sure my old card is broken, as I tested it on linux as well, and got the same problem after a while of gaming, so I need a replacement anyway. Anyway Thanks for your input :)

hmm interesting, I have been checking the price constantly, but I haven't seen any with that low price. probably second hand imho.

As for 7970m, yes it outperforms 675m by a huge amount and it's much cheaper, but, correct me if i'm wrong, sometimes it won't work switching between amd and nvidia for some old sager model as I was told. Also, I never had a pleasant experience with AMD... so ya...

firstly: the HDMI support issue is driver-related, has nothing to do with the hardware

secondly: only the sager 8170 had separate mobo divisions for nvidia/AMD, the same doesnt apply to the 8150, so theres no problem if the OP decides to upgrade to a 7970m :) (i can only recommend it, about 50% perf. boost from my previous 485M :D )

    cheers

Btw, anyone knows how to update my bios to recognize gtx 675m aside from emailing sager?

Are you sure the 675M is compatible, I thought I saw a failed testing from Eurocom months back but I could be mistaken.

Regardless, getting a 675M is not worth it when you could get a 7970M preflashed or do it yourself.
