    Hello guys,

I own a P157SM laptop with GTX780M GDDR5 GPU. Recently i am facing a weird problem while playing some graphics heavy FPS games.

I first noticed it while playing COD Ghost, after playing for sometime the frame rate suddenly drops and it stutters a bit and then quickly turns back up, more like a lag spike,

I checked the temps at load, its under 90(87~88) deg as always at max, but when i see the perfcap secion in GPUZ, i could see bars with green color, clearly stating that the GPU had hit pwr where it lagged, also i checked from GPUZ log that the clocks were down at that time from full, which means that the GPU is not getting enough power. I again faced the same problem while playing Far Cry 3 recently.

The lag spikes are not constant, sometimes they occur, sometimes don't. I have no clue about it and its been quite long i am playing games in this laptop, and so far never faced any problems in other graphics intensive games such as BF4/3, Crysis3 and so on.

Please help guys if its alarming to my GPU, i have not changed any settings , neither i changed my power adapter in months. any possible reason i ran into this? any BIOS stuff?

    thanks in advance...

how old is the laptop and have you cleaned the vents and fans out with compressed air as dust build up is one of the main culprits for raised temps which in turn will downclock the card to protect it.

umm.. how to say, temps are not my concern here, temps are normal, the laptop is 5 months old,and is in the cleanest possible condition. no dust obstruction, no blockage, fans working fine. The PerfCap is on pwr, that whats worrying me, as i cant possibly deduce any sane reason.

What clocks are you running at? Sounds like you are hitting the 110w video bios cap.

^that's with the default vBIOS yes?

Do you know what the TDP cap is with the modded vBIOS, if any?

It will void your warranty but it will allow the card to push itself harder, it goes up to at lesst 200w.

but Meaker, is it normal that am hitting a power cap with stock bios and with a new GPU, without any tweak or OC?

Yes with certain programs, that's how nvidia designed it.

ok, can you tell me how to update the Vbios, coz it seems whenever am trying to crank up the GFX details to ultra in Farcry 3 , the GPU is hitting power cap. Its annoying because whenever it does, i get terrible FPS drop spikes.

OK so I also experienced this myself, albeit in a highly artificial environment. Running Kombustor on extreme settings, both 780Ms downclock to 709 MHz after reaching steady state and GPU-z also states Pwr as a reason for performance cap.

Ok, thanks a lot to notebook review, i dug out extremely helpful contents of Vbios Flashing with nvflash and latest Vbios of 780M, Successfully Flashed my BIOS. Now i can see unlocked voltage modifier slider and also power/temperature target sliders enabled.

I can see in GPUz while playing Farcr3 at ultra, that the Power Consumption shows as 106.6% of TDP, is it normal? Also if anyone can elaborate how to do a litle overclocking with these power/temp settings so that in future in can run games safely without hitting power cap anymore? thanks again for having such wonderful and useful content.

Personally, I think this is a warranty issue. It seems Sager/Clevo did not properly design the laptop.

As far as fixing in your own, the vbios is a start. But you may akso want to put a more powerfull ac adaptor on the laptop so it can handle the extra watts. In htwingnuts review he talks about the ac adaptor mod.

You might try undervolting to reduce power consumption.
