I received a GTX1070 card today and am having some issues getting it to be utilized by my laptop (Clevo P157SM).

I have installed NVIDIA 417.71 drivers with modified INF file and device manager detects the card as installed with those drivers, Task manager and GPU-Z all detect the card with those drivers as well. However, whenever I try to make my computer use the GPU in any way, my laptop uses the Intel Integrated GPU instead.

For example, when I run the render test on GPU-Z, it puts full load on the intel GPU and does not use the GTX1070. Same for when I try to launch a game, it only shows the Intel GPU. The only time I see the GTX1070 have any load is immediately after I open GPU-Z, I can see in the GPU-Z sensors right at the start the GTX1070 clock is 1443MHz but soon it goes back to the idle clock.

This GTX1070 is very similar to a GTX1060 I bought which worked fine immediately after I installed the NVIDIA drivers with modified INF file, so I am not sure why this one is having issues.

I also tried the same things with NVIDIA 391.35 version drivers to see if older drivers fixed anything, no difference. I have also gone into NVIDIA control panel to force GPU-Z and games to use the NVIDIA GPU, but it still behaves this way.

Does anyone know what could fix this? Thank you!

What's the original application for the 1070? Was it destined for a laptop or something else?

I assume it is destined for a laptop, although I admit I'm not sure what other options there even are for it.

Custom desktops like the MSI vortex where they can have certain functions disabled. Did the listing selling it give more details? It may just be that a firmware swap is needed.

The listing didn't give any special details but before I purchased it I specifically asked if it could work in a Clevo P157SM, they said it should. Other listings for an identical looking card list some specific laptop models sometimes. Is a BIOS update or vBIOS update the same as a firmware swap?

Greetings, I just joined up to reply to this thread.

I had also gotten a GTX 1070 from Eurocom recently and had the same issue. I downloaded the 417 drivers from them and ended up modifying nvtfi.inf. It utilizes the GPU properly now. Maybe I can attach the entire archive or .inf file?

Also, even after doing all of this I'm still getting some microstutter issues. I had PremaMod v2 originally and was told to update to 1.03.11 to support the card.

Hi @Meriscorditan , thanks for replying. Which laptop model do you have? I have the P157SM (not P157SM-A) with PremaMod V2 1.03.04, and I'm not sure if there is a 1.03.11 for the non -A model. What exactly changed before/after changing your bios? Was the card working after the modded nvtfi.inf and before changing bios?

How bad are the lingering microstutter issues?

I don't think you can attach the drivers here (too large), maybe if you have an external Link or Google drive links? Could you please send me the original Eurocom drivers and the modded nvtfi.inf file seperately? Do you know what the Eurocom drivers are exactly btw, are they just NVIDIA original drivers with modified nvcvi.inf file or is there something else?

Thanks for joining to reply, very much appreciate it!

You might want to use Prema's link above first. I've been lurking here for sometime, they've got way more experience than me doing this.

If that doesn't work, here's the link to both the modded .inf and the drivers:
    https://drive.google.com/open?id=1QvOar1k7F0SANUVZCFSTD9F4N0q2P_8x
    http://downloads.eurocom.com/support/drivers/systems/251/251_GPU_NVIDIA_GTX10xx_W1064.zip

The drivers are just modded NVIDIA drivers, like you've guessed. My model of laptop is indeed a P157SM-A. In regards to the stuttering, it happens every 5-10 seconds or so. It isn't the GPU dropping power states unlike my old 880m (which I saw in Nvidia Inspector) it might be my CPU being throttled. The CPU keeps dropping clocks in Throttlestop.

Thanks so much @Prema and @Meriscorditan, I got the card working!!! I may have been overzealous in stretching it's legs though :( In some benchmarks that really push the GPU, the application abruptly closes and returns to Windows desktop, although it still seems to function when pushed a bit less hard like a 1080p game. I'm worried I damaged a mosfet because I didn't place the thermal pads over the mosfets properly. Now I'm wondering if the abruptly going to desktop is because the card is simply protecting itself from the mosfets overheating, or if it's because the mosfets are already damaged.

I posted about it in the General Gaming/Graphics card forum here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/would-gpu-still-function-with-damaged-mosfets.829355/

MOSFETs are digital devices, they are unlikely to be weakened. The 1070 can be power hungry though so have you checked your brick draw?

@Meaker@Sager Hi Meaker! Sorry I didn't reply earlier, I don't think I got a notification. I haven't checked how much power I'm drawing but I did upgrade to a 230W brick (over the 180W stock one) and I don't seem to be getting the random program exists anymore so you're probably right, the power may have been the issue. It's working quite well now! Only thing I wish I could do at this point is to up the Power limit a little as it's the only thing throttling me right now. I flashed a Alienware vBIOS with a 125W limit (mine is currently an MSI vBIOS with 115W limit) but trying to install the NVIDIA drivers @Prema linked to didn't seem to work so I switched back. I suppose I'll stay put for a while before I look into it again. You've been so much help :)

You do want to be a little careful about how much power you shove through your motherboard but an extra 10w is unlikely to kill it if you find something.
