If this could be done imagine the tempsI really want that 8850 back panel and maybe the GTX480m heat sink for my w870cu

Does anyone know if it's possible to mount the 480m heat sink from the 8850 on the 5870 from the w870cu?

See this: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...rks-d900f-running-mobility-radeon-5870-a.html. It's for a different model, but you would still need to mod the heatsink. Should give you some good ideas if you want to try it yourself.

he is using a gtx285m heat sink...is the gtx285 heat sink the same as the gtx480m heat sink found on the 8850?

In essence, if you look at the GTX480m heatsink, it's basically a 280m heatsink with an extra heatpipe that extends to the CPU side. So if you had that heatsink setup from the 8850 and the back panel, there would be a chance it could work. And on that note, I was actually surprised at how similar the 870 and the 860 are on the underside. Honestly I think a similar cooling setup could be made for the 8690, it's almost identical to the 870, the 870 just has a 2 inch thick area of nothing on the bottom that stretches it to the 17.3 spec. So really I think the same type of mod could be done if you had a different underside panel like they made for the 8850. Either way, I'm just daydreaming in the end, but still an interesting thought. ( Hey CLEVO hey! Read this here! Hey! don't laugh, it's possible!)
Albeit some heavy modifying... although I'm talking out of my rear for the most part,(who doesn't like talking out of their rear!?
) I don't even know if the 280m and the 480m are even remotely the same as in where the die and ram is situated on the card. Seems like the 5870 and the 280m are quite alike in that regard, as it has been modded to and from a 280m to a 5870.
So if I'm half right, you could get a heatsink from 8850 that has the cpu heatpipe side ( it would all be one big piece instead of 2 different heatsinks ) and the raised back panel...then you could possibly think about it. I like the idea though, I'm kind of a sucker for neat cooling ideas, I always try to come up with some kind of idea to make passive+fan setups cool like water. I can't tell for sure how the GPU to CPU heatpipe is integrated with the actual CPU heatsink, it's going underneath. But as far as I can tell, the GPU side looks the same as the gtx280m heatsink.Attached Files:

I see. Maybe someone with a 8850 and a 870 with a 5870 could try to swap the heat sinks.
GTX480m heat sink on 5870m :)
