I want to buy a Sager NP5796 to use as a 3D graphics workstation. I cannot get confirmation that the Geforce 9800M GT will support AE CS3 Open GL . Is anybody using this computer/graphics card in After Effects successfully?

If you're going to be doing 3D graphics and such, you may want to go for the Quadro FX graphics cards, such as the FX1600 or FX3600. Unfortunately, the NP5796 does not offer such an option. If your interested, another option would be the upcoming Lenovo W series. It comes with a workstation graphics card-ATI Fire GL, which will support AE CS3 Open GL and would be great for 3D graphics and other intensive work.
You could check the Lenovo website if you think this is the right notebook for you. I'm not sure whether or not you'll like the design and overall look of the notebook though. Neverthless, Lenovo makes durable, well-built notebooks meant to last a long time. It's up to you to decide. -
If you contact your vendor, you should be able to order a Quadro 1600M at the moment.
The Quadro 3600M will be available soon (in a month or so). -

That's good news. The cooling system should be able to handle it...

Thanks for the great advice. Can the Quadro FX1600 be installed in the NP5796 chassis? If not what is a suitable laptop for this card?
-
If not, contact the vendor and they should be able to help you. -
Can the NP5796 be outfitted with a Quadro 3600M as well?

Recent reviews of systems with the Quadro 3600M showed that it has 64 shaders... which would make it a variant of the 8800M GTS.
The 8800M GTX has 96 shaders. -
