Hi, so a couple of days ago I decided to go with a Clevo m860TU with a 9800m GTS but the guy I ordered to said the 9800m gts isn't in stock anymore... and worse, it probably won't be delivered anymore.
How's this possible? Isn't the 9800m GTS a new, very new, card? How can it be discarted?

I think you have that backwards; the 9800M GT is no longer available while the GTS should be available.

I don't think it's very clear as to what Nvidia is doing. First they have a 9800m GT, GTX, and GTS. Now there's a GS model. What's next, an SLT, XLT, and SRT model of the 9800? At the moment, I don't think anyone's information on what's happening with the Nvidia lineup is reliable. I don't even think Nvidia knows what they're doing. It's all very confusing. Wait a month and the 9800 GTS will probably come back. They're still putting those things in Gateway laptops so they can't be discontinued.

Ya it doesn't really make much sense. I think the market for the 9700 and 9800 is obviously skewed towards gamers and thick laptops. It's a very small percentage of overall sales. However when you look at things like Apple announcing the new MB with the 9300/9400 and Nvidia comes out a day later with their press release, they are dropping the ball bigtime. Whoever's running the show over there really doesn't have a handle on what's going on.

Yeah, so I've heard. But the GT isn't even in the list, it wasn't an option. The guy clearly said 9800m GTS, I think I'll wait a bit and see what happens.
Hopefully it gets delivered some time soon, I don't want to buy the GTX as it's too expensive atm.
    Man, this is messed up.

This is strange, you sure he didn't say GT! ? :)

Well, I think since were talking M860TU this thread should be moved to the Clevo/Sager Subforum... maybe some of the reseller dudes can help you out, or explain...

Who exactly is this "guy you ordered to"? Every reseller site I check has notebooks in stock, equipped with the GTS.

For a GT, you'll have to go Prostar.

Yeah I ordered my m860TU through prostar about 2 weeks ago because I wanted the 9800GT, to the best of my knowledge all resellers have the GTS in stock though.

Looks like Pro-Star ran out of 9800mGTs.

Anyone know why the 9800m GT is being discontinued? Currently have a laptop on order with the 9800m GT which is good.

I'm guessing they just want that larger gap between the GTS and GTX so that more people will spend the extra amount for the 1GB card.

I almost got the GTX thinking the 512mb jump to 1GB would be a huge difference. After looking at the 3dmark06 scores and Crysis benchmarks it seems the fps is just not worth the extra money. Also you can just over clock the GT when needed in the future.

At the end of the day, just make sure you get a video card that doesn't fry on you and performs as you expect. Let them GS and ST and *** it as much as they want. Once you get the performance and reliablility you want.

The 'guy' I'm refering to... well let me explain.
Here in Belgium we only have 2 big resellers, 'Discoveries' and 'Pointer Systems'.
Discoveries isn't like Sager, they don't configure any notebooks, they just distribute them, you can't buy directly off them.
So I sent an email to Discoveries to find out where I can purchase a notebook, e.g. which store they delivered to. They contacted a guy somewhere close to my home who apparantly configures the notebooks and sells them to shops. For this one time, because Discoveries asked him, he wanted to configure one for me directly. (This obviously makes things a hell of a lot cheaper)

So there you have it... I don't know where he gets his parts from but apparantly, the GTS is out of stock and has a high probability of never being in stock any time soon (his words).

So I'm screwed :( I can always go with one from Pointer Systems, who configure the notebooks themselves and sell them to shops. But it's like €250 more than I would pay for the Clevo off that other guy. And now I know that other is 250 bucks cheaper I don't feel like spending my cash...

An option I thought of is getting the GTS myself but I've got no clue where I can buy this stuff, most shops don't have mobile parts, especially not graphic cards.

    Strange...

Well, what does he want to put in there instead? I don't understand...

Hopefully it's not a 9600M like Eurocom... that is too much notebook and too little battery for a 9600M (128bit).

Kobalt from the UK still has the 9800M GT and check shipping costs? I think perhaps that the guy from Discoveries was mistaken when he spoke to the guy configuring the laptop for you. The GT is not going to be restocked in its current form but might be in a new die shrunk form. The GTS is the only available option (unless you don't mind getting the GTX kit and exceeding your thermal budget)

It's the GTX he's referring to, this will exceed both the thermal and financial budget :D

So I sent Pointer Systems a mail to help me get a 9800m gts from one of their resellers and I've got a reply back that this would be impossible because the graphics are part of the motherboard... what in tha hell...

The 'guy' also sent me a reply back that the graphics card (9800m gts) won't be available anymore before December, but he asked me if... maybe... I was interested in the M770SU with NVidia geforce 9300... 'cmon, is he being serious?...
Am I dealing with a bunch of retards here?

Then I sent an email to another shop that got products of Pointer Systems and I said (lied) that I already got a notebook and would like to upgrade to a 9800m gts, I asked if I could get the card from them and asked for a price. The only mail I got back is: "What model and brand of notebook have you got, this will not be possible for every notebook."
Geez... I don't $*%! care what his opinion on this is, I know it's possible and I just want the frigging card, I never got a mail back and this really wasted my time as they have such a slow service that it takes some days to get a reply... Why couldn't they just give me an answer to my question.
    S o - F r u s t r a t i n g !

EDIT: Got a reply back from the man that said the graphics are part of the motherboard... He said originally the graphics card was interchangable but as of now they started building the graphics card on the motherboard, assembling to it I guess or something. Not really onboard graphics, I thought he meant that.

Based on what you've said you might be dealing with a bunch of turkeys. If you REALLY want to you could do it yourself, as in get the laptop from whomever with whatever videocard and then install your videocard of choice (GT or GTS) and to do that you'd need to:

Take off the service cover, remove the heatsink, pull the GPU out of the PCIe slot, put in the new GPU, apply thermal paste, put the heatsink back on, and close the service cover again.

But if you're skittish about doing it then order from another reseller and try and get them to price match.

I don't know what language you use and how plural is formed, but in English, consider this:

    GTs = plural of GT
    GTS = singular

Therefore, confusion between the two is EXTREMELY easy - he could easily think you were asking about GT in plural (GTs) and not about the GTS in singular.
