Comes with a I7-4700MQ processor, 16 gb of ram and a GTX 770M.
I tried playing it in vindictus under medium settings, and im impressed bt the graphics quality, not so much the FPS though. Im not sure if Vindictus is just a demanding game, but my fps tends to drop in heavy fighting...and i cant reach 60 fps even though im standing in town.
Is there any way to make use of the extra ram that i have?
I know people don't like OCing notebook CPUs and GPUs, but as far as i can tell, theres no harm as long as temps are kept under control right?
So far ive tried +135 core on the GPU and +500 memory. Seems stable so far. Is it possible to go beyond this? MSI afterburner has +135 mhz but the card runs REALLY cool...gotta do more testing, but with Vindictus running and no combat, it just stays at 33 degrees.
I use intel's extreme tuning utility to increase the cache ratio of the CPU...there was a slight increase in temps, but its handling it really smoothly. Hits 55 degrees under load which is pretty cool.
Was just wondering if anyone knew how to get the most performance out of a notebook like this?

So after a quick google of that game, I am just sure that the problem is the devs haven't optimised the game properly, as with other games such as Rift, Tera and such, FPS in cities regardless of the level of detail is really low.
Not much you can really other than hope the game devs optimise their game (which going be previous experience, they don't) -
Well its just that i know some people can get pretty good FPS with the game and im not sure how they are doing it...
Im going to try running MWO on high settings next to see what kind of FPS i get in it. -
After doing some testing with furmark and MSI afterburner, i noticed one thing.
First of all, with the game open, MSI afterburner recorded my current core clock as 135 mhz. I thought this was an error, because there was no reason for my card to be running at 135 mhz when a game was open (and not minimized). GPU usage was at 50% and card temp was 33 degrees celsius.
When i ran furmark's burn in test, the core clock shot up to 800+ and CPU temp hit 50+ degrees and was climbing.
After i quit furmark, MSI afterburner recorded that the core clock dropped.
So for some reason, my card is running at low core speed even when a game is running....how do i fix this?
And yes, i have the game set to run using the card via nvidia control panel. -
Yeah those temps are extremely low. I'm guessing that the GPU is not being fully stressed - if it were being utilised 99% temps would be a lot higher. GPU-Z is a program that can show you whether the GPU is being fully utilised. Under the sensors tab there is a section that shows GPU load. If you get low fps and low utilisation then that is the issue.
EDIT: I see you have already figured this out and posted a few minutes before I finished this post! 50% utilisation is not how it should be when fps is low. I would suggest trying a) see if there are any newer GPU drivers available [current NVIDIA drivers are beta 326.19] b) try switching to borderless windowed mode if the game supports it c) try turning VSYNC off in the game settings and forcing through control panel instead to see if that makes a difference. Good luck! -
I think i found what was causing it. Nvidia control panel has "power management mode" set to use "adaptive" by default, which downclocks the GPU to save power. I set it to "prefer maximum performance" and im getting a stable 60 FPS in town.

Can anyone tell me what safe temps are for the GPU and CPU that i have?
Also is it normal for MSI afterburner to report a core clock of 705 mhz for the GTX 770M, even after OCing it by +100 mhz? -
Testing with furmark shows the core clock will increase to 865 or so, which i suppose includes Nvidia's inbuilt turbo boost or whatever they are calling it.
But with a game open, it only runs at a core clock of 705...
I have already changed the nvidia control panel settings to "prefer maximum performance" so in theory, the card should be running at full speed. This clearly isnt happening though.
Anyone have any ideas?
Also MSI afterburner does not seem capable of adjusting the core clock for some reason (it stays at 705 mhz). -
does this lappy have optimus. if so im guessing it could be using the HD4000 until you actually play the game.
also have you got lappy set to balanced or high performance. hover over the battery on taksbar and make sure high is ticked.
safe temps for gpu are below 90c or it will start downclocking or throttling to protect the hardware.
cpu can go higher, ive had 94-96c before but that was running intel extreme tuning which will push them to the max.
the lower the temps the better really. -
Optimus isnt the issue, i already set it to use the GPU instea of integrated graphics and its working (i can tell from the GPU usage)
