I'm about to purchase the 8150 but not sure if I would want the Glossy or matte screen. I know glossy gives off reflection and the matte doesn't.

    What should I choose?

Depends how bright is your place.

    G - reflecting a lot.
    M - works fine.

But contrast is better on G.

After 1 week of working with NB you will not care about it all.

There no right or wrong choice here, no matter what either side will say. Glossy screens have characteristically more contrast and more vivid colors while usability is very dependent on environmental lighting (or lack thereof). Matte screens are much more impervious to bright sources of light, but do not have as much contrast or colors that are as vivid.

The ONLY right way to pick is to go to Best Buy or some electronics store. Walk around and look at different monitors and laptops to choose for yourself. Everything that can be said here is somewhat subjective, so make sure you check things out in person.

That said, I own the 95% glossy version and know someone with the 95% matte version (in a ThinkPad). Both are very nice and I would be happy with either. I made my decision to go with glossy because I do not use my machine outdoors and use it mainly for personal leisure. If it was a more work-oriented machine, I would go matte because they are easier on the eyes if you stare at them for ten hours straight.

Matte all the way for general purposes.

Glossy if your laptop is going to be in dark or dim room 100%.

I am going to make it as easy to understand as possible.

Glossy is way more beautiful but gives off a massive amount of reflection, but looking away from that, you've got a awesome screen that shows colors at their best! I would recommend this if you tend to game in the dark, or edit a lot of pictures in the daylight at home where the sun isn't lighting on your screen.

On the other side, a matte screen gives you the ultimate possibility to portablize (is that a word?) your laptop in any lighting condition possible, you will be able to see everything unless you actually put your laptop 100 ft from the surface of the sun :D

Glossy is pretty, matte is smart ;)

Some people also just hate looking at a glossy screen no matter how dark the room. I have light-sensitive eyes and I hate bright sources of light.

I will pick a matte screen every single time.

Glossy is more vibrant making them better for gaming. Explosions etc will "pop" more on glossy screens.

Matte give better color representation making them better for Photo editing or Graphic design where you need to get the most exact colors.

Both are good for either but depending on what you're doing, one will be better suited.

Wait a minute.. I thought that the glossy one gave a better colour representation?

Also you can buy a sweet external large glossy monitor to use at home in a dim room, along with some rockin speakers. I dont really notice the matte when using it, but I suspect I would appreciate it a lot more if I were using it outside or in a brightly lit building.

My vote goes for matte or anti-glare. I couldn't stand the reflections on my M18x and had to tear the glass cover apart to make the screen anti-glare. Night and day difference, IMHO.

Many have said that the Glossy 95% screen does seem to be more vibrant in color than the Matte 95%.

However, I like them both for different reasons. For example for a work machine I like the Matte. :)

My work laptop is matte which I use in many lighting situations, but gaming laptop which I only use as a desktop replacement at home is glossy. Best of both worlds.

    Same here. :D

If I had to do it over ten times, I'd do it that way every time. Now, if I needed to merge the two, I think I would have to go matte just to be safe.

Go matte and never look back, my friend.
The 'advantages' of a glossy screen is all just placebo effect.

so true. I got the matte and I'm happy with it. It's nice to not have glare imo but if I got glossy, I would have been just as happy (actually I chose glossy first, but they were backordered)

And if you merge the two - here's what you get, - amazing crispiness + anti-glare. Unfortunately, I only found such panel in 18.4" format. All matte screens that I ever owned including the (8760w) IPS RGBLED, had some graininess in them.

What are the manufacturer IDs of the screens in question, and how do they compare when contrast, blacks, whites, and color accuracy are measured? Besides glossy vs matte, is one screen technically superior to the other?

I remember the first time a glossy desktop caught my eye.. at Frys with an Unreal 3 playable demo running.

I think for gaming, the glossy displays really make it pop, but as soon as light enters whatever room you're in, it gets annoying real fast.
