I am upgrading my PS3 60 GB HDD to a 500 GB one. So I figured I should put the 60 GB one in my P170's secondary HDD bay. I was just wondering if someone could tell me the steps or point me to a website that explains how to do this and what I need to do in Windows 7 Home Premium to format it.

I know this is prolly common knowledge but I figured I would ask first so it goes smoothly.

Assuming it's a standard 2.5" SATA drive in use in the PS3, it's as simple as plug and play on your laptop. The secondary bay is underneath the optical drive, so you'll have to just slot it in there and start the machine up. If it's not formatted, you'll need to go to Start > right click Computer > Manage > Disk Management and get the disk formatted and assigned a drive letter in Windows. You don't need any new hardware for it, as the P170 should be all set for the second drive.

Here's a link to the service manual if you need more detailed instructions (thanks to Theriko for the link):

It should be plug-and-play... Try it out and if there are problems, come back and we'll try to sort them out :)
The most likely problem would be that it's not formatted, in which you would just follow MALIBAL's instructions.

Yea it will be in the ps3 file format, so i'll just have to format it. Won't be much of a boost, only like 50 some gb, but i might as well throw it in my Sager since it won't be of any use with my ps3.

I get the 500 gb hdd for my ps3 on wednesday so that's when I will try it out. I'll report back if it works or not.
