I am looking forward to buy SSDs for NP9170. Any recommendations? (regardless of size)

I was told Samsung 830 256gb is good. Is it actually good or just a good deal?

    Thanks

It is one of the top performing ssds on the market at the moment, besides the intel 520; it's also at a very good price point otherwise i would not hesitate to get a crucial m4 of the same size.

Samsung SSDs are great, as are the Intel 520 and the Crucial M4.

Honestly, just about any SATA III SSD should be fine in your system.

I'm personally running an OCZ Vertex 3 120GB in my desktop, my wife is running the Samsung 830 128GB SSD in hers. I haven't had a single issue with either of them. Just be sure to keep the firmware updated and it should last.

    Just some famous brands...

The Samsung 830 is probably the safest and most secure SSD out on the market.

The M4 is one of the cheapest GB/per $/£/€ w/e

The Mushkin is THE cheapest fast SSD out there

The 520 is one of the fastest SSD's out there

The HyperX is probably the faster on pair with the Vertex 4

:) there are others, but these are the one's to be looking for

Crucial M4 is the best bang for the buck and the moment, I believe. Samsung is really nice, but they're a bit more expensive.

I believe that Crucial M4 is $179.99 unless they have gone up again and the samsung can be had for $199.99 from the last time I was checking prices. Both 256Gb of course.

Well that sucks... I saw your post a little too late!

The Crucial M4 128 Sata III SSD was on sale for $100 (free shipping) on Amazon last week.

    :/

    I bought one... :D

I am using a Sandisk Extreme 256gb, their price went down this week from 220 to 180. No problems installing it; just plug-n-played it (and installed windows7 on it). And it is the same top tier as the others.
I am booting in under 10 seconds. :D

Question to people; with such a fast boot and using shutdown instead, is it still dangerous protection/information loophole if I turn off my password login for my Windows?

Yes Sir ! Some people think the Vertex 4 isn't worth buying, but since 1.4.1.3 Firmware Update, the data speeds are just amazing ! The HyperX is a little bit faster but a waay more expensive than OCZ Vertex 4 !

I can't speak for the other brands but we primarily sell Intel 520 series in our SSD equipped systems. Of the hundreds we've sent out, we have not had a single failure. They are super fast and solid like a rock. Granted, they're a bit pricier than their competitors but no one ever regretted buying a reliable storage drive.

Hope this helps with your decision.

I have had really good luck with the SanDisks Extreme SSDs. Great reviews and performance on par with the Samsung's. WHen they had the $179 deal for the 240Gb had to grab a few the other day.

Stay away from Sandforce based drives, yet another issue has arisen with their controllers.

Marvel based, OCZ Vertex 4, and Samsung are great buys, but the Samsung has serious issues with garbage collection if your going to RAID it.

Be wary of Intel as they have joined the Sandforce sinking ship on many models.

I have a Sandisk Extreme SSD 256gb; this SSD is sandforce based, and I had no issues plug-n-playing it into my laptop.

Also, I highly doubt anybody will be running their SSD in raid (in all practicality).

I would like to know of these SandForce "issues" as well. Links?

As far as running SSDs in RAID configuration, there are some that have and the number is growing.

I did find an interesting thread in the Alienware section here http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware/664114-intel-rapid-storage-technology-11-1-0-1006-ssd-raid0-trim-support.html
Please be aware, this is experimental, but some reported that it did work.
With TRIM support in RAID 0, should Intel release the proper support for laptops for it, we can expect to see more people ready to play with it.

Most of the SandForce issues have been put to rest by firmware.

We, my company, just did an install of 30 Intel 530 and 30 SanDisk Extremes in test systems about a month ago. These systems are design for testing graphics and lcd monitors. The testing is actually pretty tough on the drives due to logs and video creation. They also run pretty much 24/7 doing simulations.

Out of those 60 systems we have had one failure that could be attributed to the SSD. They were all extremely easy to setup and not one had a BSOD.

I searched for any new issues after the "issues" post above and don't really see anything new. The had the 256 bit issue that is really from last year.

Curious as well. Not saying you are wrong, just not hearing anything.

From my own experience and reading lots of reviews, I personally feel Crucial M4, Intel 520 series, Samsung 830, and Sandisk Extreme are all great products in terms of quality and performance while other SSD brands all had somewhat mixed results. I own one Sandisk Extreme 240GB and two Crucial M4s (128GB and 512GB). They've been running strong in my desktop and laptop. Crucial M4 probably gives you the best bang for the buck at this time and they have excellent reading speed although their writing speed may not be as fast as some others. But to me it's far from a dealbreaker. Put aside personal preference on brand names, if it were me I'll probably just go with the best deal I could find.

It seems Intel found a problem with SandForce AES-256 Encryption. The encryption is fine at AES-128 and seems that Intel will rate the 520 as such. Intel has also instituted a return program for people that are not satisfied with the lower 128-bit encryption.

AnandTech - Intel Discovers SandForce SF-2281 Controller Can't Do AES-256 Encryption, Offers Return Program

Intel SSD 520 Series - Encryption Spec Update

I was set on a 520 for a future P170EM purchase because of Intel's reputation for dependability, testing and what I had read in reviews about performance and their own SandForce firmware. Particularly this from the following review:

" I only have one data point where the 520 behaves better than other SF-2281 based drives, but that alone is a perfect example of what you pay for with Intel. This is exactly what we've been waiting for. If you want the absolute fastest SSD on the market today, the Intel SSD 520 is the only drive to get. If you're put off by the price, Samsung's SSD 830 is an excellent alternative.

AnandTech - Intel SSD 520 Review: Cherryville Brings Reliability to SandForce

I'm not sure that 256-bit encryption really matters to me on my personal laptop. So, the 520 may still be my choice. Hopefully, the price will come down.
Kudos to Intel for standing behind their product and the rigorous testing they do. They are doing SandForce's work. I wouldn't hesitate to buy Intel but maybe not the 520.

That was the issue that came out a while back. That issue would really only effect laptops/computers used in government or other high security areas that actually use hardware encryption. I had a lot of questions from my clients when this first came to light and then they realized it had zero to do with them with the exception of a few government clients.
