i was setting my mind on getting a sager 8660 but i've seen that if i did, i couldn't upgrade the video card. how true is this? and if it is, should i still get it? or go for a larger 17'' laptop, so i could upgrade when the time comes

Buy the notebook that has the video card you want, and never count on upgrading it later. That's the general rule of thumb with notebooks. There are no upgrade guarantees when it comes to notebooks and their video cards. Even though the NP8660 has a removable video card, Clevo/Sager might not release other cards for it.

The 9800M GTS is a very good video card . . . it will be good for gaming for a while.

My advice is to decide on if you really want a 17" notebook or not. Then you need to realize that there is no gaurantee whatsoever that you will be able to upgrade the video card. Sometimes a new motherboard is required, and sometimes, there are factors such as the cooling system that makes it impossible for an upgrade.

Get the most laptop for what you can afford.

Go for the NP8660! I wouldn't worry about upgrading. I'd say by the time that 9800M GTS is on its last legs for medium/high gaming, it will probably be high time to get a new rig (3 or 4 years?). That's all I gotta say.
