Well, this is my first laptop, and also my first attempt at installing an OS from scratch (not to mention drivers).

PLEASE help me out with what to do. I have an XP CD (from my desktop - is it transferable?) as well as the Sager drivers CD, but I'm not sure what to do.

EDIT: I tried putting in the XP CD then booting up, but when it started installing it got to an error message that basically said "Installation has stopped to prevent damage to the computer. If this is the first time you encountered this, restart."

I restarted, but now nothing happens after the "Phoenix Technologies" load screen, just a blank DOS type screen with a flashing cursor "_".

EDIT2: Just realized my XP CD is an XP Upgrade, not standalone, what should I do? (I have a serial number). Like could I install an old Windows standalone like 2000 then upgrade to XP?

    its an upgrade?
did you go to your bios and set it up where it "boots from cd-rom" instead of from harddrive?

    and also...
i think you need an original to make an upgrade..
    that just makes sense.. xD..

Right, we purchased these for our desktops and at the time I guess we already had Windows 2000 or something.

Can I use the same XP as my desktop if I intend to discontinue use of my desktop permanently? Or do I need a new copy?

Bump, after I figure out this OS issue, what then?

How do I install the drivers?

    Is Vista a bad choice?

Well, OS comes first now doesn't it? :D

Try the original OS disk that came with your machine. If it worked on the desktop, I don't see why it won't work on your laptop.

The drivers are very self explanatory. Insert disk, click on each folder, click on setup application, install. Watch out for the sound driver though. Make sure to uninstall the default drive Windows automatically installs, it's incompatible and disables the sound.

How do I uninstall the sound driver from XP? Is there anything else I should look out for?

    Thanks!

EDIT: Also, should I install the given VGA drivers or the latest ones (not sure if they're the same). Also, there are two of them, 90I and 91I, which should I do?

Unless there's something that you NEED that you know doesn't work with Vista, you might as well keep your vista installation and try it out for a while. If you end up not liking it, then maybe "upgrade" to XP. Unless you got your laptop with no OS, in that case, it's your call.

You go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Software > Something about sound driver > uninstall.
