After about a week of research (greatly helped out by this forum) I decided to go with a Sager 5791 from xoticpc. It arrived today, but sadly my enthusiasm quickly dimmed when I was unable to turn it on.
I tried charging the battery fully.
I tried pulling the battery out and putting it back in.
I tried calling xotic pc support. A human picked up on the first ring (which was nice), but, after a failed suggestion that I remove the battery and AC cord, hold down the power button for 30 seconds, and turn it back on, he was unable help.
He said that the factory was closed and that someone would get in touch with me tomorrow.
I've looked at this Sager forum and a couple of the other main ones (Dell, HP), and didn't see any similar instances. Is this an isolated incident? Or does this happen with some regularity? Should I have gone with a Dell?
I have a $2450 paperweight. The only signs of life that it shows are the yellow light telling me its plugged in and the green light saying that the battery is fully charged. The lights blink off when I press the power key, and then nothing.
I'll post updates as events warrant. Thanks for letting me whine.

Maybe try remove the acess panel reseating the ram
I don,nt think they care if you did this unless it has warrenty seal on it maybe something came lose in shiping -
Hopefully XoticPC support will help you competently tomorrow, they get great (I mean amazing) customer service reviews so I expect you will have this problem dealt with. Good luck!

Do you hear the HDD spinning up? What status lights are lit? Before you push the power button and after? I'm thinking it might be your LCD cable. It might have come loose during shipping (or if it wasn't seated properly) Just a thought.
And yes, it happens on other laptops also. Do a search for Dead laptop and you'll find several about other manufactures and their DOA laptops. I feel your pain though. It kind of ruins that 1st feeling of elation when you get the new lappie. -
Wu Jen may be right! either HDD or LCD. try remove the cover and re-plug the HDD, see what's happen.
-
Forgive me for being a cynic, but if you pay $2,500 for a laptop computer, there is no reason it should come to your doorstep DOA. Granted, isolated incidents are bound to happen, and things happen during shipping. At the least, he shouldn't have to pay a dime if the laptop came to him that way, IMHO.
I say this being a cheap bastard, and in hopes that this doesn't happen to my laptop when I get it. -
Thanks for the suggestions all.
You are probably correct that something came unplugged on shipping. Since nothing is making any noises, I don't think its an LCD problem. HD or RAM makes more sense to my non-expert brain.
I don't want to take the cover off until I at least talk to the tech support tomorrow, however. -
Give them a chancem I have worked with them on minor things and they (XOTIC and Sager) have always come through with no complaints. It is unfortunate that it arrived this way but they will make it right. If nothing is happening I would suggest looking at the ram modules it will prevent anything form happing. The harddrive is the next logical step as well. Keep us posted on what happens that way others will know what to expect when they have problems.

im sure they will take care of it but normally they do require you to pay shipping back to either them or sager so i would def make it clear if it was received doa that your not picking up that tab at least i would it it was me..
look at it this way now maybe you can be one of the few VERY lucky ones and simply send it back and wait for the 8800gtx.. i know i would if i was in your place.. good luck -
check before sending.
or they just cross ship. re-sellers hmmpffft -
after you find out what happened to the laptop please tell us. i'm intrigued...
cause, ya know, after reading something like this, i don't know if buying a laptop that has no warranty outside the U.S is a good and smart idea, if i buy it, and then they send it here and i recieve a dead laptop then... that's it, there's nothing i can do(if a send it back for repairs it will cost a fortune), i'm between buying a Sager 5791 or a XPS M1530(when higher res are available)... if the Dell breaks, then i have a warranty here in my country, i'm covered and i can send it for repairs locally. -
I talked to Xotic and they do not make the buyer pay for issues under warranty.

The e-mail from the Sager folk (They did try to call, but I accidentally left my cell phone home):
"If still no POSt, check the bottom side open a big cover so you can see the memory slot reseat the memory and also check the vidoe card , make sure is not loose.
Is the box ok, no damage?"
Pretty much the same thing you guys said (there was no box damage).
I opened up the big bottom panel. I didn't see anything amiss (although I am far from an expert). I poked and prodded around and did not see anything obviously loose. I pushed and pulled on the RAM (or at least what I think was the RAM), but did not feel comfortable completely pulling it out and putting it back in, for fear of breaking it.
I really didn't think I did anything meaningful, but when I closed it back up and tried to start it up again, to my surprise, it powered right up.
I'm still a bit concerned that the slightest jostle could knock this thing back out of action though.
Thanks for the help all. I'll update if anything more interesting happens. -
they dont charge for the repairs but they do charge the shipping to go back to sager. they do not cover that at least thats what i was told by justin

Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
Sager branded systems are provided with shipping covered. It is non branded units (such as barebones) that are not covered.

ah i see well that sucks.. another reason i should have went with one already assembled. for those thinking a barebones is a great deal on these its really not. they simply dont take care of as much as they do with a assembled one simply due to it not saying sager and saying style note.. same stinking thing.. no offense justin but just makes me a bit mad. they would not even replace my second keyboard i had TO BUY IT. and yes that was the problem. i even called and told them the new one i bought fixed it and they just said great.. nothing like well send that one back etc.. so im pretty much over sager, ill def deal with you again but prob not for a sager

Your issue with it not powering up is nothing that is out of the ordinary...
Shipping companies really suck if you ask me.. I have had stuff thrown around and damaged...
You would be surprised what they do with the box...
You probably fixed it my pushing the memory in....
zfactor,
Its unfortunate about your barebones situation... But I understand why companies don't give you the better support.... Its really hard to prove to them that you didn't cause the issue...
Anyway...
Xotic is a great place to buy from...
