That used to happen with me and my Radeon 9700. An update of the drivers fixed that though. So it might be a driver issue. The 'refreshing' of the image, going from 2d to 3d or something might have needed tweaking. I'm just guessing but my solution was to get an updated driver.

    Change the drivers.
    Or minimise with Alt Enter...

Being able to alt-tab in and out of games and the results of doing it depend alot on the game itself. Some will not let you alt-tab at all. Some will, and then some will crash while doing it. I know with Lord of the Rings Online, I can not alt-tab with it unless it is in windowed mode, and then of course Sli does not work unless it is full screen mode. Anyways, if I can alt-tab in and out of game without it crashing, I consider myself lucky (and the game is still playable with no graphic glitches).

Like eleron911 stated, alt-enter is ussually the hot key for entering windowed mode (repeat to leave windowed mode)
