hello all so my graphics card has decided it no longer wanted to be a graphics card.

It’s the AMD 7970m can’t seem to find any for sale any where?

What other graphics cards will work for my laptop, I know it’s a bit dated now but I’m not too fussed just as long as it works.

    intel i7 3720qm
32gb ram (person I bought it off upgraded to this much)

    Any information would be great

    Cheers
    James

Any and all Clevo specific MXM GPU's will work on that chassis without any issues since you already got the AMD heatsink, the 8970M / M290X for example is the best AMD card you can get for that laptop. Dell cards will not work period.

On nVidia side we have a bit more choice, the MSI 1060 will work and the MSI 1070 including GeCube 1070 (avoid the green ones, get blue one instead) But if you want to get the 1070 you need 230W TDP power brick, I know where you can get these dirt cheap proper brand ones from Taobao if you are interested.

But if I would rather recommend either the 8970M or the 1060, with the nVidia GeForce GTX 1060 you need to place a very thin copper shim between the core die and the heatsink because there interference on the left side of the card with the die. 0.5mm should be good enough but I recommend 0.3mm, you can find these copper shims on eBay, remember to buy it large as possible so it covers the entire die.

If you need further help just ask.

Try eBay, or Taobao if you make an account, you can utilise Bhiner to buy it from Taobao, AliExpress has some too but its usually same price as eBay with more inconvenience in buying.
When you search for MXM GPU's you can either search such as "7970M" and look for the card or just search by product code, on AMD cards its usually pain to find them but for nVidia they can be found on nVidia's website.

eBay has a lot of MXM cards usually and its easy to use compared to Taobao, https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fr...=0&LH_TitleDesc=0&_osacat=0&_odkw=Clevo+7970M

If you have trouble with anything, like if you want to order 1060 but want a better deal I might be able to find one on Taobao, and/or if you do not find a proper thin sized copper shim.

I personally would stick with AMD and not have to bother with GSync whitelisting.

Problem for him and every other Clevo user is that R9 M290X is the highest AMD GPU they can use, the W7170M, Rx 480, Rx 580 and WX 7100 wont work in Clevo, they only work in HP, Dell and some MSI laptops.

The 1060 would provide much better results even without dynamic refresh rates.

Well, that blows. :( So the only realistic upgrade path on AMD side is eGPU. (If you have TB3)

Even then you wont want much faster than the 590 due to latency bottlenecks.

Yeah, M290X with some vBIOS magic is still pretty capable, you can get it pretty close to a 970M but its going to run REALLY hot if you do.

1060 is not bad at all, but if I were him though I just get rid of the chassis, its got ****ty audio with no bass unless he has surround sound system even then it sounds pretty flat, go for Alienware or MSI from 2011 - 2012, he can reuse his CPU and memory these chassis can be had for pretty decent prices these days, I got my Alienware M17x R4 and it was practically unused by the looks of it, the guy took good care of it I paid 400 dollars or something, he never opened it either and if 17 inch is not your thing, MSI got a lot of 15 inch ones and MSI can have the W7170M and WX 7100 working in them just fine apart from fan control last time I read about them.

Even then the Rx 480/WX 7100 is not ALL that much faster than a 1060, its faster yes but at the cost of higher power use of 150W juices being sucked through your laptop while the 1060 probably do maximum spikes of 120W, I had the WX 7100 spike to 180~W for very short periods.

If swapping I would not mess around with the older systems at this point. It's generally not going to be worth it.

nVidia mobile gtx series 7xxm and gtx 8xxm, will not work in p1x0 EM.
If you are considering 8970m, I recommend this shop from Holland(or the Netherlands)
For everyday use(stable), my card (while maintaining the standard voltage) worked on 975core / 1425m. Some Firestrike or 3Dmark performance results with a specification similar to yours.
If you do not prefer overclocking, then stock Firestrike.

The best performance and temperature as well as high costs - msi 1060(even vortex version is working in this clevo).
if you properly apply thermal grease and thermal-pads, you can expect temperatures not exceeding 75°.
Unfortunately, for 1060 software and hardware modifications are required.

Or look for some gtx 675mx or sth like that.

/// Hey SMGJohn what happened to yours p150em?
