Hi everyone. I've been lurking, and posting a bit, on these forums for a while now. My plan so far was to wait till the M860TU came, so that I could jump from my 'screen-one-third-dead' Inspiron 9300. However, a friend of mine is coming here (India) next month and has offered to get me a new system. Unfortunately, I was planning to buy some photography gear (got hooked to Strobist recently!) and won't have enough money to get that along with a new system.

The only choices I now have are the following:

    1. Get the system (5793) and cut the photo gear.
    2. Forego the system currently and get the photo gear. Get the system by December or some time early next year (Ouch!)
    3. Get the photo gear and the XPS1530 (with a $600 off currently.)

I know that the XPS has an 8600M GT, which pales into oblivion in front of the 5793's 8800M GTX, but I gotta make a choice, and fast. Do you think the 8600 will be able to play the games coming out in the next couple of years at 1280x800 with medium-high settings? Does it make sense to splurge now or wait a bit? I'm really confused, 'coz I can't forgo too much of the photo gear (my sister is getting married next month.)

The 8600M GT is fine NOW for medium settings,in new games, but this year a lot of new ones will be released and that might have to go into `low` .
As I always say, get NOW what YOU NEED and don`t listen to others telling you what to get unless it`s options of the same thing you need.
The 5793 seems the smart choice :)

If only I could get the money when I NEEDED it (that'd be everyday then, :p!)
Unfortunately, it's a BIG constraint, but you're right. the 8600 with start stuttering in a year's time...

Games: heavy duty stuff... HL2 (just finished, :p), plan to play CoD4 next, Oblivion, Gears of War, Hitman: Blood Money, and future games incl. Mass Effect, Haze (whenever they're released for PC.)

Total budget is $3000, incl. system+photo gear. I've already configured somewhere around $1500 worth of gear, so I'll have to cut down on it significantly to get the 5793... which is doable, albeit a little hard... but doable. I just need to know whether I'll lose something major by not waiting for the 860TU.

Have you looked at the gateway p-6831fx? I had one for a while and it was more than capable of playing current, not only that but you could upgrade the processor later on to increase the performance. Price would be little less than 1400$.

fyi I wouldn't go with a dell, but thats just me :D

If money were not a constraint, I'd go for the Sager 5793 (based on reviews and experience with both Sager and Dell). Since money is always a constraint, this seems like an academic exercise.

Anyone know why the 8800 is so expensive ($465 upgrade at most places)? Using the upgrade price, I put the value of this module north of $550 (likely more considering an 8700 is probably worth more than $100), which seems very high. Anyone know why this is and if we can expect price drops in the near future?

    Thanks.

There is a big request for the 8800M GTX atm. Almost every performance notebook seller need a stock and NVIDIA can`t produce them as fast as they are selling them...So basically its the high demand/ low availabilty which drives the prices (and greed naturally :D).

    @topic.

As I understood it you need the camera equipment now and can wait on a computer.

I would get a good camera and buy the XPS1530. This nb should be ok for the coming year (only on mid-range settings). And if you start to save money now you could get a better system next year. You could probably even sell the XPS1530 then for a few hundered bucks...

    or

Only the camera and do a few months of saving and get the new Sager-line with monteniva...

Wow! Thanks for all the responses guys. I think it'll be better if I wait till December, then.

    Thanks for helping me decide!

I did look at the P171X FX for a long time... even got a Gateway rep to come down to $1725 (no accessories, stock warranty, delivered) but unfortunately their delivery schedule won't allow my friend to have it before he leaves for India. That means I'll have to wait anyway, so I'd rather just wait it out for the 860TU.
