Has anyone tried this? If you have, how much did this reduce fan noise? I'm thinking about purchasing the NP9150 but the noise is making me think twice.

For the GTX675 and 680 cards, I'm assuming that Optimus will turn off the GPU fan but from an earlier fan I've learned that the CPU fan may just keep running but at a lower speed.

So, if you've tried grease, I'd love to hear about what kind you used and how much it helped.

    Thanks!

Its really kinda quiet for a gaming laptop. Its just a bit louder than an Asus. The fan noise isn't from the bearings so i don't see grease helping. Its from the air moving. If you want to make it quieter do the cooling mods and get a gtx680m. My GPU and Cpu doesnt go above 74° so the fans never spool up. Its actually as loud as my gf no dedicated GPU notebook. As long you prop up the back. Apply the ffoil mod. Apply some heatsinks and getvsome good thermal paste on there you are good. A notepal U3 helps too

Fan noise on the 680M won't be quieter than the 7970M. The fans on the P150EM soon as a game starts will ramp up. The full on throttle won't start until around 93C. Fan noise on 7970M and 680M should be exactly the same.

But I agree, the fan noise is surprisingly quieter than I expected. It's certainly much louder than an ultrabook or the average notebook, but considering what it is, it's quieter than expected. And actually, my G73JH is louder when gaming.

Foil mod... is that a variation on the copper heat sink mod?

I was thinking about getting those and the IC Diamond paste. I'd probably install the copper myself and just have the reseller (or factory, whoever does that) do the thermal paste. I'm thinking I'll go with a GTX670M or the 675M to start and upgrade in about a year to a better GPU. Haven't made up my mind between the 670 and 675 though.

Packing this much power into a 15" platform requires a bit of noise to cool it. There aren't any other 15" machines with these GPUs available. I was a bit worried about noise before I bought mine, but it's not that loud at all. Relative to some of the really quiet 17" machines like Asus and Alienware, it's probably louder, but I really like the extra portability.
