I recently switched to ubuntu linux and was wondering if anybody knew of a program for linux that will give me the same functionality as green charger does in windows.

For those who don't know, green charger allows you to cap your battery to charge to only a certain percentage, like 50% for example, prolonging its life span in the long run.

Hmmm... I wasn't aware that Li-Ions gained any benefit from only partially charging..

I've heard that you can prolong the battery usable life if you only charge up to 80%, as any more takes a higher current to recharge.

Where can I get green charger? Or is it a Sager/Clevo Utility?

    WOW, ubuntu linux bro :)

saying frankly i never ever heard about such kind of progs either on linux, iether on windows. and it seem to there is no sense in it, coz afaik Li-On do not have "memory effect". from other hand, on my older laptop there was such option in BIOS as "battery calibration". it calibrates the battery on 0%.

Coul pls make me a favor? could run in terminal next commands:
    lspci
    lsusb

i'd like to see hardware install coz i'm goona get 8662 and i'd like to prepare for possible problems.

It's not supposed to be about the memory effect. It's about keeping the battery capacity lower as to not stress the cell when charging the last few percent and to prevent possible overcharging.

But those features are already present in modern chargers anyway.

The benefit gained by charging to 50% would be negligible, and with only 50%battery life you might as well have killed your battery anyway, because it's only got 50% charge to start with. There's no point in extending the length of time it can hold full charge when you're only using 50% of it's capacity anyway.

    It's just not logical.

It is logical. I have had the same battery in my T400 for 6 months, and it can still hold 102% charge. You mistreat the battery, you get what my dad has (83%).

I haven't really found anything in synaptic, but there are a lot of battery utilities there.

I haven't found anything on linux forums either.

Sorry, 102%? You might wanna recalibrate your battery, ditto your dad.

I guess my point is that chargers are designed to prolong battery life anyway, and how can you worry about losing 27% total life when your precaution was to only use 50% to start wih?

i can not see audio chip (aka ALCxxx), i read somewhere it's ALC662. quiet problematic chip in fact, but alsa 1.0.17 or 18 works fine.

here's no mentioning of webcam. i also read that it's bison one. does it works for you?

    and ... thanks, man

Well it seems I'll be charging my battery to full now and hoping that it doesn't deteriorate too much.

After I was unable to find a native linux program that could replicate the functions of green charger, I tried to run the windows program through wine. So far no luck. The installer gave me an error and didn't install the program. I then tried running the already installed program from my windows partition. That didn't work either, the farthest I've gotten is having it briefly appear in the top right.

The only other option seems to be trying to run it through a virtual machine, but I don't know if that would work at all.

    starche_old:

I'm not too sure why the audio chip and webcam don't show up. I haven't had any problems with audio playback using the default drivers ubuntu installs, and the webcam seems to be working fine as well, I tested it through Skype.

Always glad to help :) feel free to pm me if you have more questions regarding linux on the 2092.

when i was dual booting vista and ubuntu, i had green charger set to 75% and whenever i was in linux, it never charged above 75%. it was kinda neat/lame cause i had to go back into vista to change it to 50 or 100.
