Hey guys, it's been quite a while since I've posted on the forums cause I can usually figure out most of my problems, but this one has me stumped. Any time I plug in an HDMI cable to laptop to try and watch a movie on my TV, the sound only comes out of my laptop speakers and not the TV. I have tried everything I can think of to fix it and nothing has worked. I've updated all of my drivers and they are all current. I've un-installed and reinstalled my audio driver, but no luck. When I go to the control panel -> sound there is no output available which says HDMI, which there should be. Even with "view disabled devices" enabled there is still nothing there. I have tried disabling and enabling all the options available in every combination with no success. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it. Thanks for the help guys.

Did you try setting the Realtek Digital Output as Default Device?

Edit: Nevermind I've just found out it's for S/PDIF-Out

I know you said never mind but yeah I did try that along with disabling the speakers, but no success.

By the way does your NP8130 come with Optimus enabled? Mine has Optimus enabled, I haven't tried HDMI out yet, but I have a feeling it'll run into a similar problem as the HDMI out is managed by the iGPU. There are only 2 devices showed in the playback device list: Speakers and Realtek Digital Output. The encoded formats I can choose in the Realtek Digital Output Properties are DTS Audio/Dolby Digital/Microsoft WMA Pro Audio. Nothing labled HDMI showing in there. Perhaps the combination of S/PDIF-Out for audio + HDMI out for video is meant to be used?

My np8130 is not optimus enabled. I really hope that using both is not the case cause thats very inconvenient. thanks for the input though. If anyone else has any suggestions please let me know.

Under "Playback devices" in sound I have Digital Audio(HDMI). If you have that as well, set that as the default device and restart whatever program you are using to watch the movie. Let me know if that works for you

See that's the problem, I don't have HDMI listed under playback devices. All I have is speakers and Realtek digital output, neither of which works for the HDMI audio.

I've had this problem before, but on my desktop, which is also an nvidia card.

    Some options that worked before:

    - Try and uninstall the video drivers and then the audio drivers and then re-installing the audio drivers first then the video drivers; if that doesn't work, try in different orders.

    - Plug the HDMI cable in first and then restart the laptop.

    - Is the HDMI cable faulty? Test it on say a PS3/BR player first to test the audio. (I got a new one for my brother and it worked)

Hey thanks for the suggestions. I have tried installing and un-installing both the audio and video drivers many, many times with no progress. I tried plugging in the cable and restarting the laptop, that didn't work either. Also its not the cable, the cable works. It is plugged into my blu-ray player which I use quite regularly. Thanks for trying though haha. Anyone else? This seems like a simple problem but I have search everywhere on the web and can't find a solution anywhere.

I have the same problem with the np6165. I just use external speakers from my laptop for the sound. I couldn't find a way to fix it

Haha well when I'm watching a movie in a huge living room with 6 other people those tiny speakers aren't gonna cut it. Plus a movie with crappy sound... I'd rather not watch it. The sound is half of the experience.

Oh I actually hooked it up to my surround sound. it works very well, you can always try doing a complete reinstall of win 7 but that prob wont do anything

It works fine for me. This may be a fairly isolated problem.

right ive sussed it out. this is for nvidia users but i guess its roughly the same for ati.
    warning. read all before attempting.

go to nvidia control panel and on left click set up digital audio
if you have a hdmi cable connected it should automatically show up in the box.
click on the tab below open windows sound settings
you will have 2 realtek options in there. the one that is ticked needs to be turned off first. double click on the one with the green tick and at bottom click on tab device usage. click dont use this device (disable).
then go back to the other realtek digital output and click use this device (enable)
your done. you should now have sound out your tv and not your lappy.

    it worked for me :D

ok, now comes the fun bit.
as youve disabled the realtek onboard sound it then removes it from the list. only problem after a reboot you still have no onboard sound as it says no audio output sound is installed. theres got to be a easier way than this.

now where did i put my drivers disk :(

reloaded driver and all works fine.
so, turning of realtek internal driver actually deletes it once youve changed over to digital output.
