So my laptop detects there is an HDMI connection when I plug it in, even detects the make/model of the screen it's connected to, and seems to think the screen is extended/duplicated whatever. Unfortunately there is zero video/audio. I don't have a second cable to test but it works just fine with another laptop and my Xbox.

Considering it's a Malibal and their reputation has soured pretty significantly(and this would be my third time getting the thing serviced in 2 years) I would prefer to fix this myself!

Drivers are all up to date, just did a clean Windows 7 install.

    I'm stumped.

Right click on the speaker icon in your system tray and pick playback devices. Then pick your TV and set as default.

Unfortunately that isn't the issue. It autoswitches to the HDMI output, yet there is no audio or video actually coming out the other end.

It's hard to know which end is the problem, but considering the cable/screen are both confirmed to work otherwise I'm inclined to say it is on the laptop's end.

Ah so you're not getting video either. A few trouble shooting things you can try if you haven't yet. See if another Monitor/TV will work or try another HDMI cable. You can also try updating the drivers for your video card to see if that helps. Other then that it may be something that needs to be sent in to get checked out.
