    Hi,

I have the feeling something is going wrong with my computer. I was getting blue screens in Windows XP, but they were all happening in the same program so I figured I'd just wipe the Windows partition and reformat to Vista 64. I also downloaded this CPUID Hardware Monitor thing to check if my temperatures were in normal range.

The hard drive temperature is what is really worrying me here - last night it was up at 64 C, which is outside what I googled to be its maximum operating temperature of 60 C. I turned it off and let it cool overnight, wiped off the fans on the bottom of the machine, and turned it on again this morning. When I started, the HD temperature was only 29, but as I have used the computer for some light internet work, it has slowly been creeping up. In the screenshot it is up at 50, as I am typing this it has already risen to 53. I have the fans on the Fn-1 maximum setting, but that hasn't had any effect on cooling the hard drive.

    What's going on here?

Hmm if your fans are running and your HDD is idle, that is a bit high. I believe mine floats around the 55C mark. At 60C I still don't think there is need to worry. What kind of surface is your system resting on? Probably the best way to bring down those temps would be a notebook cooler.

The ideal temperature is around 45c. A peak of 64c is quite high.

Your OS might be putting uneccesary load on it. Turn off any unnecessary programs and services. Vista is known to 'disk thrash' which puts load on the HD causing it to heat up more.

HDD temps are fine as long as they do not float past 60C and stay there.

My new 5793 has the same problem: the 200gb 72000rpm disk likes to hang around the 55C-60C mark, often around 58C or so. I wonder if a laptop cooler, like a Zalman 2000, would bring it down enough to make the cost worthwhile? Anyone had any experience with such?

    Thanks

I have the Zalmon 2000 and the same HD as you. Without the cooler it's 48-49 C and with it's about 44-45C.

I've hardly seen mine get more than 55-56C without the cooler, even during a virus scan. Are you using your pc on a hard surface? And what is the temp in your room?

I run the Sager on a hard surface, with the front of it elevated about an inch. The back, where the fans are, is about 1/2 inch above the surface. The interior temperature of our RV varies between 75 & 81 degrees (it's summer here in the Rogue Valley, with outside highs in the nineties)

its not the notebook, its the type of HDD that you use that will determine the HDD temps.

    For example,
7200rpm drives are hotter than 5400rpm usually.

I opened up the computer and dusted out as much as I saw that could be blocking the fans, and I disabled as many Vista services as I could find, including indexing and SuperFetch. The HD access light still flickers every second or so, but the normal use temperature (with max fan) has gone to about 48 in ACPI, 42 for the processor, and 53 for the HD. Still high, but a nice improvement, I guess. I also took the battery out since I don't need it for desktop usage, and I figured it might be heating the system.

Any idea why the HD light is flickering, and if there's some other service / app I can disable to stop that from happening? Maybe those accesses are keeping the temperature above 50.

I don't have a notebook cooler, but I do use the notebook on a hard desk.

that HDD temp is fine really.

As long as its under 60C during long duration usage, then you are good.

Interesting, i made a thread recently about high temps on my notebook (hard drive included). I assume the NP5790 is the M570RU? Your temps are eerily simular to mine.

From the HD temps of the 5793 users who have posted here the 5793 HDs have tended to have higher Temps then the 9262 or any other laptop in its class. I think Eleron (I Think) said that it was due to the placement of the HD in the 5793 chassis,

I had a look and the operating temp of my Hard Drive seems to be 60*c max. Ive seen it at 64*c. It seems most hard drives are 60*c so...
