I'm trying to remove the hard drive from my NP9150, and it turns out one of the screws holding down the insulation plate is stripped. I'm going to put a Samsung 840 Pro in the primary bay. Does the SSD need the insulation plate? Can I just leave the HDD as is with the insulation plate on it and stick it in the optical drive bay?

shouldnt be a problem, just make sure that it doesnt have any wiggle room, otherwise it may disconnect if u move the machine around. some users just use a piece of cardboard for that :p

So is the insulation plate even necessary? Does it need to be on the SSD? The SSD doesn't wiggle at all in the primary slot, and it turns out the HDD won't fit in the optical drive bay caddy UNLESS i take off the insulation plate (the screws on each side are preventing it from sliding in). Thanks so much for the answer btw, I'm sitting here eagerly awaiting the chance to fire this thing up for this first time. :p

yeah for the ODD bay caddy its definitely not necessary. as for the primary SATA bay, it can help in some cases to prevent any unwanted shifting of the installed hard disk. but yeah, if it sits tightly in there without it, im sure ull be fine :) enjoy ur machine :D

Thanks again! As it turns out, I cannot even use the HDD in the optical bay because it won't fit with that darn stripped screw in it. I'll just boot without it for now. The SSD is definitely not wiggling...I gave the laptop a LIGHT shake, and I heard and saw nothing as far as movement it concerned...I didn't know that was what the insulation plate was for, by the name it sounded like I needed it to prevent the hard drive from overheating! Once again, thank you so much for the help. :)
