Having heard the potential problems with heat with the NP8660 hard drive I've started to think about possible solutions. Would it be possible to put in a 320gb 7200 rpm Scorpio hard drive from Western Digital? I found a site that sells it just a bit more than the price of the equivalent available from xoticpc or Sager.
P.S. I'm sorry for asking rather than doing the research myself. I understand little about hardware configuration in Laptops, this will be my first one.

Yes you could, but c'mon, all reports have just stated that it gets a little WARM. It's not a meltdown as yet.
The laptop in initial test is staying cool and relatively quiet. -
If the 320GB 7200RPM hard drive is a Seagate, what is the company that makes the 250GB 7200RPM hard drive?
-
I could vouch that seagates run hot with full blast fans running.
Hdd idle is at 46c and while on virus scan or playing a game all the way upto 57c. I have called sager twice on the temps and both times they said it was normal...I dont see my HDD lasting more then 1yr at this rate.
And what I have read the WD do run cooler and shouldn't have a problem upgrading. Now if you order thru a builder you could have had your choice of HDD mfg.
Hope that helped. -
Well, my hard drives in my desktop system are in the mid 50s idle, don't know how high they go when busy, and 2/4 I have them for 2.5 years, not dead yet.

Maybe getting a 16G SSD for around 60 bucks would help?
-
Anyone know what hard drives Xotic uses on their machines or do all Sager machines use Seagate?
-

All Sager machines use the same brand hard drives. The resellers don't touch them.
-
Go to a 5400 rpm drive.. longer battery life and lower heat.
-
So Seagate? or what? IMO Hitachi wins.

Sager does not use any particular brand hard drive. They alone decide what they will use, and it will change from time to time base on market conditions.
-
Hmmmm. Speaking of which - is it possible to "downclock" a 7,200RPM HDD so it runs at 5400RPM, or lower? If I wanted to save a little battery life while on the go.
Does it even make much of a difference -
My old Acer Aspire 5560 has a HD temp about 70-80 c when playing games and about 50-60 at normal condition
buy it works ok for almost 4years now.
Dont worry too much. -
-
The difference in battery life between a 7200 and a 5400 is miminal.
The performance however, is noticeable -

get this, I think it should help ...

Theoretically they shouldn't be, but they are. -
Just get a 320GB 5400rpm drive, it will perform as good as previous 7200rpm drives, but it will give you more storage and less heat.
-
Is there a ranking/round up of all 7k320 drives?
It seems like the WD 320 is the best, how far behind is Seagate? -
sweeeeeeeet. Just found out that PCMW is putting the Hitachi Travelstar 7K320 in our PCMW orders.
http://gadget.blogdig.net/archives/...tachi_Travelstar_7K320_Sips_Little_Power.html
And I found out that PCMW included 4GB of DDR3 1333 mem in my order without even knowing! They will be shipping by the end of this week and those who ordered from PCMW should get it early next - to late next week.
Oh yeah - Deathwinger: we get the 2gb Turbo memory for FREE. They are including it in every EDGE order! -

I guess it is because they charged you more on something else ...
-
****it I want a Travelstar... Anything but a Seagate.
-
Travelstar is said to operate at the power consumption levels of a 5400rpm drive - with shock protection! -

For real? Which company you bought it from?
-
is there room for a second HD or SSD drive on the NP8860/M60TU, similar to the Asus G50v?
-

Can you order an laptop for the same price for me? I will make the payment and change the address. Because I when I went there their basline price was much more than what it should be.

I used a laptop cooler, so for me, my laptops temps were no prob. While at vacation, I played crysis for 2 hours, and the temps were oddly low, even cool after touching both surfaces. Although that might be the hotel rooms insane AC.

Where was the hotel located? North pole?
-
Somewhere in Asia. The unit was probably built by Carrier?

If the 320GB 7200RPM is a Seagate, what are the brands of the other hard drives currently available? I would definitely get a Western Digital hard drive. They run cool and quiet.
-
2GB Turbo Memory for free, and Paladin's description of it really makes it sound incredibly worth it. Well, what can I say...
...WE DESERVE IT!Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
Yeah man. After being heckled for long. We are the only few people that didn't give in to the "don't buy from PCMW" rhetoric. They made everyone who had great deals cancel their orders. Tsk tsk.
Man that Hitachi drive is sick. That's what they're putting in our systems. Due to the less energy it consumes - heat will definately be less.
And - we'll for sure have the fastest M860TU's here - thank you ddr3 1333mhz! -
I guess we can hope not to have that warm sensation at the lower right of the notebook. Signature updated to suit.
-
Since the notebook/mainboard can only use memory speeds up to 1066, what's the point, to get 1333 which will at best downclocked? I didn't even know you could get 1333 ram modules for notebooks. -
Can people still get deals similar to DRTH_STi and Deathwinger's from pcmw?

I'm sure there will be a Labor Day sale though. -

Since the DDR3 1333 will be run at 1066, then how is it going to have any increased performance difference on the current notebook?
They are not cars, they are memory modules. -

When has RAM speed ever been the bottle neck of a gaming rig?

What are peoples opinions on free-fall sensors. I've heard mixed reviews on them. Some people say by the time it initiates the damage is already done, while others say its a miracle.
-
youdontneedtoknow Notebook Evangelist
They won't be useful on NP8660, because you would break the whole system if you try free fall with NP8660
-
-
BlueMak are you on holiday with Chunghwa? Because it was Chunghwa who made the comment about the hotel A/C.
Freefall sensors seem to be pretty good, one company is advertising a minimum 200ms time or 6" drop to stop the platters and retract the head.
