As it says in the title Has anyone managed to buy and install a second gtx280m onto the M980NU themselves?
If so, where did you get it from, how much and how difficult is it?

well i have re-seated both of my card on my M980Nu when i brought it to put some good thermal compound on them while I was at Kobalt and the phyiscal act of doing it was really easy.
8/9 screws for the main back plate, then unscrew the heatsink for the card and then do whatever and reverse. Very easy todo.
However i know for a fact my OEM cant get hold of cards to sell, they are only able to get hold of warranty replacements and even then its a push
not only that but the cost is very expensive for a 2nd card
Best option is to get 2 cards with the machine itself, even if that means waiting a little while

Ah I thought I would ask the question since I ordered it with one card, knowing it was SLI but not knowing they are hard to get, I does seem pointless to me to make mxm but not supply any frigging cards for them. my main concern is that iv been to the mobile card sellers thread and all the sites that sell them are really seedy and dark, I heard they did a mobile physix card, could I put that in?
-
i have no idea is the honest answer i havent even heard of one
if you havent had your laptop shipped, i would get onto your OEM and see if you can get it changed -
The machines just came out, I'm sure all the cards are in use actually building them. If you want the option to order later I'm sure it will be there but you need to give it time.
-
It's just shipped and tbh I can't afford the extra card anyways, but I do hope your right about there all being built and there will be future availablity, is this card brand new then, how longs it been out? And If it does become readily available will it be the first notebook graphic card that is?
-
Well they havent even been released by Sager yet,
Kobalt got thier first ones beginning of August which is when i got mine -
Out of curiousity how much did it save you not to add the second card?
-
it cost me £250 odd to add a second card on my machine
but i know that if you dont buy one as part of the unit it costs around £350 for one -
i couldent select a second one look :- http://www.meshcomputers.com/Default.aspx?PAGE=PRODUCTVIEWPAGE&USG=PRODUCT&ENT=PRODUCT&KEY=584743
i did look at kobalt systems but it was too expensive i set my max at £1700.
and since i was going for a single gtx280m mesh was cheaper and with a faster cpu -
oh you ordered from mesh
good luck -
very helpful :/
at the end of the day its gonna be the same as everyone elses m980nu
but still, has anyone even purchased a gtx280m ? -
-
alright then pman, jesus, iv just spent £1600 with them and i dont need you to be negative, iv not had a problem with them yet, theyv gave me loads of discount and im happy so far, when they do, if they do, mess up il make my own decision
but besides that i asked a question to anyone who had purchased a gtx 280 since i would like to and would like to see if anyone has befor me.
thanks -
Only a few of us on this board have the 980. All of us ordered it with 2 GPUs to date. So I don't know if you'll find anyone who's done it. I guess check with owners of other models that have used the 980.

Just make sure you get the MXM 3.0 version and that it comes with a HS, and you're good to go. Clevo's are built so that it's easy to swap the CPU/GPU/HDD etc.
