Has anyone replaced the garbage speakers in the P9170 or P9150?

Got a headache using the search function on this site (why does NBR of all places have such horrible forum options?!) which is why I made this thread. Anyway, for once I would like to not use my headphones so I can actually hear things that go on around me, lol. So has anyone tried this, and if so, what speakers did you go with?

It's not really the sound quality for me, it's more of the sound level. I have to have it cranked all the way up, and even then I might miss some things. And I'm not going deaf, I just have a couple of fans in my room, lol.

not that i recommend either, but do you have the realtek driver/audio manager software and THX software installed? they both have some adjustable "loudness" settings. not sure how much louder it makes everything because i don't use it myself, but check it out if you haven't already.

You may have already tried it but often times in Control Panel under Sounds you can find an option to boost the sound levels. Helped with my girls laptop.

I find that the speakers are plenty loud and I don't have the best hearing (tested).

i wonder it is the chip/amp section's problems and you may not get want you want by just changing the speakers.

also changing your speakers could void your warranty so if you want to go down that route then check with your supplier first.

simple solution if its sat on a table in your room is get a cheap pair of speakers or even a 5.1 setup which will work without an external soundcard.
    black lead headphone socket
green lead mic in (speaker out) socket
yellow lead spdif (speaker out) socket

Would like to know the answer to this question as well - my p150em has probably the weakest speakers of any laptop I have owned in the past, even p170hm and my work laptop sounded a lot better. Would be awesome if we could install JBL speakers from Dell XPS laptops, my wife has those and they are amazingly loud and clear.

None of the settings really adjust audio level except for volume, including loudness equalization. What software would you recommend if I get rid of Realtek?

I have found that messing with the settings on my NP9170 for a while has actually made it sound quite nice. In fact, it sounds better than the full sound system I have on my desktop (granted that it is a cheaper one). However, things that already sound bad tend to sound even worse. Putting the crystalizer on full and messing with the surround sound setting for awhile is usually helpful. For the volume issue, go to realtek and the THX truestudio and put both of their volumes at 100% and then adjust the volume in all of your applications so it is the same and then you can just use fn+F5 or F6 to adjust the volume. If it is still way to quiet, the speakers might be defective.

Remember even hooking up a speaker set to the notebook wont sound great either.

Hooking up my edifier speakers to my soundblaster scout is like night and day compared to the onboard.

sorry mate but i have to disagree with that.
ive got an old set of creative 5.1 speakers that came with my first ever mesh desktop which has to be over 10 years ago and even with just the green (front two) plugged into headphone socket it makes a hell of a difference. plugging all 3 in and i cant tell hardly any difference between now and when i used a x-fi express card soundcard on my m860tu

Well using the inbuilt, tweaking the settings I can't get good definition or bass, something I have no issue with my external.

I found that adjusting the surround sound settings added to the bass, but it took me a bit to find the right setting. Also, I have a pair of audiotechnica (I think that is how it is spelled) headphones that sound great from the NP9170 and I am a bit of an audiophile.

all i done was open realtek HD audio manager and change the speaker config on the left to 5.1 or 7.1
the green plug i have in my headphone socket and theres plenty of bass and great sound especially in game. adding the yellow and black plucgs to the next 2 sockets gives speaker out and you have full surround sound.

try the s/pdif next to it. im sure last time i tried it gave me rear speakers and sub bass together. i cant get to the back of the sub/amp and it was years ago so im not sure whats plugged in what.
using the headphones and s/pdif should give 5 speakers and its only the centre speaker thats not working so will be more than 2.1 but not exactly 5.1

    how about 4.3/4 :D
