Most time is because it can be done, in other cases its for people who need the Mac OS and dont want to pay the price premium, others like myself do it because Apples hardware in insufficient and need to build their own solution. I fall under the third category NEEDING a quadro GPU for video editing and the only Apple solution was a Mac Pro desktop config @ $7000. or hackintosh an Elitebook 8740W.

WAT 7 grand? holy jeebus, didn't know they got that pricey lol. So you like the os, just not the hardware that comes with it.
-
no it is because alot of my old legacy video editing is Mac only and I need to keep it. in the last 2 years I transitioned away from OSX as my primary OS
, I think alit of people do it to learn the OS or try it out. -
i think its just a "im doing this cuz i CAN" kinda thing

There are entire communities dedicated to hackintosh builds
Advantages? Well that depends. It's a fun process for tinkerers. Lots of small details to get a solid install. For people who enjoy Mac OS X, this is an alternative way to use it, however it is generally not an optimal way using a laptop. Building a desktop hackintosh with supported hardware you can make it feel just like a real Mac. Laptops are hit or miss, and usually you'll get X feature missing.
Mac OS X is actually a pretty nice operating system. Mountain Lion is a little too gadgety for my tastes with some of the iOS integration, and I also don't like how it is geared towards simple users, with a lot of point and click. However, having a Unix backend is nice for those who require it.
But end of day its just a fun project that you can say youve done lol.

I have installed OSX on my p170em too but am having trouble getting hd4000 to work. I have a 7970m so the 4000's my only hope. Do you have a platform-id or device-properties in your org.chameleon.Boot.plist ?
Thanks,
Phrighe -
@Phrighe
1) this is my "org.chameleon.Boot.plist
<key>EthernetBuiltIn</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>ForceWake</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>Graphics Mode</key>
<string>1920x1080x32</string>
<key>Instant Menu</key>
<string>Yes</string>
<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>-v -f darkwake=0</string>
<key>USBBusFix</key>
<string>Yes</string>

</dict>
</plist>
N.B: YES the "device-properties" key is for to get "hd4000" to work
2) use champlist from here to creat "SMBios.plist" (select MacBookPro10,1)
3)download and copy (decompress) this AppleACPIPlatform kext
to your usb mac installer in "System\Library\Extensions" (delete the original one).
4)creat folder in the root of your usb mac installer, name it "Extra"
5)download and copy (decompress) this Extensions.zip to the "extra folder" of course with "org.chameleon.Boot.plist"
and "SMBios.plist"
6)install the chameleon bootloader ( Chameleon 2.2svn Official PKG Installer & Binaries - New Releases and Updates - InsanelyMac Forum ) to your usb, restart and install. that's it.
N.B: USED THIS WITH VANILLA MOUNTAIN LION 10.8.2
sorry for my english -
Out of curiosity, what ISN'T working properly? Kind of tempted to give this a shot. Either that, or wait for iATKOS ML to be released at some point in the near future. -
I installed Mac OS X on a Clevo W240HU/W250HUQ model from the Romanian retailer Maguay (MyWay V1501i, Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU B940 @ 2.00GHz). To be honest, I didn't even know it was a Clevo when I did it, I just had this machine around, I got it from a business partner as some kind of gift for helping them out with some networking stuff.
I used Unibeast to create the bootable USB flash drive and went from there. I installed Mountain Lion 10.8 and later updated to 10.8.2 using the built-in update features of the OS.
To be honest, I didn't expect it to work so well, having in mind that I have a fairly low end processor. Why I did it? 1. I wanted to know if I can and 2. I'd like to try some iOS programming using XCode without paying too much for a good Mac or getting a cheaper one but with limited hardware.
What's working:
1. Audio, including the Mic
2. Sleep
3. WiFi and Bluetooth (BT worked out of the box, WiFi didn't, so I replaced the module with an Atheros module from a HP laptop, paid about $15 for it)
4. Webcam
5. Updates, App Store, iCloud, pretty much everything
6. Functional keys, including the Sleep key
7. Battery indicator
What's not working:
1. Ethernet (someone started to work on a driver but it's an early alfa stage that basically does nothing; probably it will never work but I can live without it)
2. Sound doesn't work after Sleep, I bet it can be fixed, didn't look into it yet
3. The CPU includes HD2000 graphics adapter; since it's not supported by Apple, I can have decent resolution (1366x768) and it works fine, but the Launchpad is extremely slow and most games don't work; so if something needs acceleration, it basically doesn't work
4. Battery drains pretty quickly, probably the power management doesn't work so good
What I didn't try:
1. HDMI output
2. VGA output
To solve the graphics problem I'm thinking to get a i3 or i5 processor and replace the one I have. These both come with HD3000 graphics and they should work a lot better.
If you need any details, let me know. -
I am amazed that Apple doesn't have something at the BIOS/Firmware level that checks to make sure it's an Apple machine. I mean c'mon, how many Apple machines are there? Not many. Can't be that hard to do.
Actually I don't get why they just don't make having an Apple machine a requirement? All Apple machines come with MacOS installed, so no need to sell it in stores. And if it's on digital, you have to do it on a Apple machine, that verifies it is an Apple machine and digital distribution only.
W/E, just thinking why Apple doesn't do this, they are already the devil demon of keeping everything proprietary and screw over the customer, I don't see this being more than a baby step for them to do. It's not any more satanic than what they are already do now.
Wait even better, I don't understand why they even offer upgrades! They should just say, if you want the next version/update? Get a new Apple. That sure seems what they want you to do anyway with multiple Apple product releases per year and ALL of them introducing nothing new, but just something new for the sake of having something new. And breaking every technology patent out there and stealing every idea possible and renaming it to be their own. Yeah we have the RETINA display when it's totally a LG IPS technology, screw Apple. Whatever.
I hope in 2013, Apple treats their customers even worse than they do now and torture those die hard MacHeads. Yes I want to see MacHeads eat Apple's dirty candy, suck on it, love it and continue to be loyal die hards and love it. Watching them suffer and love it, will just be A.W.E.S.O.M.E! -
its even more sad when we HAVE to hackintosh some systems because Apple loves us so dearly they cant be bothered to make hardware combos that are NEEDED for many of us. -
hi,
has anyone tried on W550EU ? -
Hi, I tried MacOSX Mountain Lion 10.8.2 on P370EM and it's working perfectly !
NVIDIA 670MX works with full performance, backlit keyboard works, FN keys , speakers + subwoofer, camera, usb 3.0 ports,
One problem I had with WiFi, but I resolved it replacing another WiFi module (on Atheros). ML works stable, works very fast on my SSD.
Right now my P370EM is 2 in 1 full workstation with W7 and MacOSX on deck :] -
In addition to my previous post I want to say that I did upgrade the processor to i3-2350m with integrated HD 3000 graphics. Everything runs fine now, Launchpad works fine, Youtube works fine. I also have HDMI output and I can use an extra display.
-
Hi guys, did someone tried to install OSX on Clevo W350ET?
-
Me and my friends have been searching for anyone who has tried installing mountain lion on p370em. Your the first I found who was successful in installing this. So far with my sager Np9370 p370, i'm stuck at partially having a functional mac os x mt lion while my W7 does not have an issue.
It would be awesome if you could share or if its not too much to provide us a guide on how you did it. I'm also having issues with DSDT, which I'm not sure if I choose the right settings.
None so far in has come up with an installation guide for this type of laptop.
my specs is similar to yours including: intel i7 3740qm, intel 520 480gb ssd, crucial m4 msata 256gb ssd, creative sound blaster x-fi, bigfoot killer n-1202 network card.
I hope you'll find time to share your installation guide.
Thanks in advance,

Bump on this topic... anyone got an install guide for P150EM?

Anyone tried to install Maverick on W350ST?

I am interested in maveric on a p177sm

It's not impossible BUT forget about your gtx card, no support of optimus technology on mac for it!

Wifi most likely won't work if its Intel-based or Qualcomm-based. Broadcom has very limited support and atheros, more chips work than not. If you have a non-functional chip, buy a cheap USB wifi dongle that says its OS X compatible.
To get graphics working, you'll likely need the nVidia alternate driver to have everything working properly.
Your best bet to get a working machine is to use multibeast. Just remember to use Clover EFI bootloader.
Honestly, its not worth the hassle... It took me hours to get it working right on my P377SM-A and I ended up messing it up with a system update even though it was a supposedly "vanilla" install. Its more for tweaking than anything else and the nVidia drivers are buggy and might need the display order to be changed with an EFI string in order to not have a black display.
Has anyone tried OS X on their Clevo?
