I have a dvi to dvi cable hooked up to a monitor from my laptop because this is the only way I can use my laptop at the moment. Only half the desktop is showing on my laptop. If it is gone, would I be able to just install a gtx 670mx directly without issues? I know a gtx 670m can be installed so I would assume a gtx 670mx can be too???

Looks more like a bad laptop screen. Is it the same on startup and in BIOS setup?

Yeah, same thing. Any way to test if it's a bad laptop screen vs graphics card? It kept on saying that my graphics drivers have crashed and windows has recovered them leading up to the point where my screen now looks like that.

Seeing that it outputs ok to the external monitor, I would say the graphics card is ok.

as volcane said, as you external is ok its not the graphics card. could be a lose ribbon cable from all the opening and shutting of the lid.

Sounds good, better than getting a new graphics card anyways. Are there instructions on opening this thing up? I've swapped out screens on a laptop before so I'm okay with checking.

I would contact malibal first, say you have a service manual and what you want to do and they may clear it to do it yourself if you still have a warranty.

I contacted them earlier about the problem and they said that my warranty has expired on it. I think I only had a one year warranty on this and it expired about 3 months ago.

You may still be able to have them issue you a RMA, but it will cost you. Depending on their policies, there's a possibility they will work with you on the cost - especially since it is likely that the card malfunctioned via normal wear and tear, rather than accidental damage.

But if you want to give it a whirl yourself, or just don't feel like paying/don't have the money for it, then by all means; fire away!

I've checked the ribbon cable and unfortunately that wasn't it. The problem still persists with only the top half showing.

Did you check both ends. The end at the LCD and on the MOBO?

Test it with the unit on. As long as you're not touching the motherboard and exposing it to ESD, you can play with the seating to the screen itself.

But if you test the seating at the board, then absolutely have no power running to it, and make sure you're grounded.

Thanks, I will try that tomorrow.

Probably a dumb question, but where is the cable running to the mobo located? I removed all the easily removable components like the graphics card and keyboard. Do I need to disassemble the laptop even further to get to it? Also, thank you to everyone for being so helpful.

IIRC it's under the top cover, if you search p150em service manual in google you will find better pictures and where the connector is on the PCB.

Thanks, I found it. I checked the cable on both the mobo and lcd this time and the problem is still there. I also noticed on my graphics card a little discoloration, could this have been the issue? I just remembered that I have a friend at school with the same laptop. I'll try swapping the graphics card and lcd to find out where the problem lies.

Alright... dude. Before you break your friend's laptop and yours, try a new LCD. If it outputs to the external monitor fine I can pretty much tell you that it's NOT a problem with your video card.

*edit* Also, if you haven't done this before and you pull your friend's card out and don't apply new thermal paste you could cause heat issues for him too. (I don't know your skill level.... just letting you know ;))

Where would I get a new LCD to try out (other than buying one on ebay or something)?

Can I return them if the LCD is not the issue?

Well i just ordered a 7970m from mythlogic and they said it has a 1 year warranty but never asked about returning it. You can go to mythlogics page and live chat them and ask. You will still need to pay shipping at the very least.
