Just a crazy question for YOU! Has anyone ever sprayed rubbing alcohol/isopropyl on computer equiptment/heatsink/fins etc to dissapate heat?

Funny story, my friend at work brought in his gameing notebook to show everyone and had it all heated up. Then he proceeded to show me the best way to dissipate heat by spraying our industrial rubbing alcohol on the heat sink fins to cool it down. I could not believe how fast is cooled down, quite neat.

    Anyways, just somthing i found interesting. Now wheres my **** M860TU! :D :D :D

Ya it is possible, even evaporation of water will help to cool your laptop.

I wonder if Killer Notebooks will release a liquid cooled NP8660.

Hopefully, they won't just go the old-school method of dumping the lappy in a vat of oil and call it a day.

But the vomit would short out the mainboard!

Everyone knows acids are conductive. Okay, no... but when you paid attention to only one thing in High School chemistry, you tend to flaunt that knowledge.

Just to rain (or is that sprinkle alcohol) on everyone's parade a little - I seem to recall a little hysteria about NVidia GPUs failing due to repeated heat/cool cycling - a process that was exacerbated as the frequency of the cycling increased - sprinkling alcohol on a system, even if it otherwise has no deleterious effects, might not be the best thing for a GPU with the potential to fail early due to thermal cycling problems. ;)

Hmmm, using parts from 2003? My pokey ole vaio's from 2003, so perhaps I just need to dump it into a vat of baby oil as well.....?

    I know.

For some reason, the real cooling and over clocking enthusiasts are all death metal fans. Even the guy who introduced me to this clip. Go figure.

I know Cannibal Corpse doesn't put me into a tweaking mood.

wasted all those mineral oil :( He could have just put a bag of ice on top of that heat sink. Aslo that the GPU was not imerged in the oil, so the only part that benefited was that CPU.

Don't want any water -- either directly or through condensation -- getting on that CPU, tho.

    That video was wicked.

Oh yah, along with the LED lights, they have enlarged pictures of minerals that light up for decoration! :p

it makes sense since mineral oil has a large heat capacity which means it can store a lot of heat before temperature is raised by one degree, though it is also somewhat of an insulator, which means it has low conduction of heat. It is also non-polar, which means there will be little redox reactions.

Conclusion, heat will eventually build up as more heat absorbed by the surronding mineral oil, but before then it is ok to be used to reduce CPU temperature.

I used rubbing alcohol to try and clean my palmrest because there was a mark on it when I first got it. Probably accelerated the palmstain that's there now.

The submerged PC (at the least the first one I know of) was first done about 2 years ago by these guys. They have plenty of purty pictures and a couple years of notes so you know what to expect if you want to dunk your computer. I say go for it, especially if it's a media center PC or server.
