I just discovered Clevo build laptops within the last week and have been very intrigued at having the ability to upgrade a lot of components. I was curious of how many folks actually upgrade their video card and what you upgraded to.

    First post btw!!

I upgraded from a NVIDIA GTX 285m to the AMD Radeon HD 6970m and I am very satisfied.

It is probably one of the biggest draws. Even if I don't do it, at least I can :)

oan001, do you have any sort of benchmarks for any recent games? Just curious to see how much just upgrading the GPU helped, because I originally planned on getting a new laptop in a few years from now, but if upgrading the GPU helps a lot, then maybe that is the way to go.

The absolute biggest problems with the whole capability of upgrading the graphics card are:

    1. A single graphics card costs a lot of money most of the time.
    2. The MXM slot type can change without notice, leaving you in the dust.

That being said, my D901C went from 1x 8800M GTX to 2x 9800M GTX in SLi a few years back, and the performance gains were huge (probably cause of second card added). I probably wouldn't do something like that again, though. Why? Because it was very expensive, but I had the cash at the time, so I figured why not.

The jump from a 285M to a 6970M is absolutely massive, a 6970M will handle current games very well. The thing with upgrading GPUs is the MXM standard, which seems to be staying the same for the upcoming generation of cards, but may change soon after. If the MXM standards are not the same, the card and laptop will not be compatible, so you cannot upgrade. I'm sure there are also other issues that may come into play such as BIOS support and possibly power supply.

The jump from the 485m to the 580m should only amount to about 10-15%. Some people here have been able to overclock their 485m's to match the 580m in performance (at stock).

    The increase was about 100%

I wouldn't bother to upgrade unless the increase is around 50%

Anything else would be a waste IMHO.

I got the card for $250 from the marketplace. It made my BF3 experience much better (from low to high, with better fps), which was my main reason for upgrading.
