This comes from AMD, so hold your horses. It may well be faster than a GTX 580M, but wait untill some independent sites has had a closer look at it first. Anandtech are sure to put it to the test very soon.

Well, I want a proper test, not just some bars or graphs they have got straight from AMD's PR department.

I'm pretty sure AMD wouldn't publish those results unless they were at least partially true. If it were an outright lie Nvidia would be justified in suing them, not to mention AMD breaking false advertising laws. However in reality it comes down to whether you used biased conditions to favor your product, i.e. like using old drivers for the other product, etc.

AMD Launches Radeon HD 6990M, Most Powerful Mobile GPU Yet

On several benchmark test results released by AMD, the 6990M outperformed the Nvidia GeFOrce GTX 580M by about 20 percent on 3DMark Vantage and 3DMark11, and about 15 percent in Left 4 Dead 2.

    Here is what I find
    A vantage benchmark of downclocked 6870 @724/1060.

Thanks, Saltius. Is that with 'optimal graphics' forced in Catalyst? That's the only way right to keep the AMD drivers from downscaling graphics, which the Nvidia drivers don't do, and thus the only way to make a fair comparison (a point which often seems lost on people).

    AMD Radeon? HD 6990M Graphics

14 In tests conducted in AMD performance labs at 1920x1080, simulating mobile performance with a down-clocked desktop test system

We'd better notice that AMD did NOT have a 6990m right in their hands so they used a downclocked 6870 to perform the test.

They may fail to downclock the card correctly due to catalyst or driver issue or something similar.
The result that AMD gave may come from a 900MHz 6870 other than 715MHz one.

But what we need is a downscaling desktop 6870 to check and estimate the power of 6990m, isn't it?

sigh...why don't AMD just obtain a GTX 580m, and have their own GPU...and test on some Sager notebook lol...o wait--this might actually tell the truth.

as far as im concerned i wont believe facts until its a real mobile gpu not some downclocked desktop card. also the tests should be done by an independent company not amd or nvidia to get me to believe that it is around 20% faster.

I tottaly agree with you. I race bikes, and the same thing happens with bike stiffness, weight, and aerodynamic benchmarks. I only trust this German third party tester when it comes down to bike benchmarks. I usually rely on Notebook Check for my mobile GPU benchmarks.

I have no problem, with them downclocking desktop GPUs.

The 6990M and GTX 580M are simply downclocked 6870 and GTX 560 Ti anyway. Nothing else changes.

I'm with you on that. While there are going to be some architectural differences between the chips, but I think the raw performance numbers should be similar to underclocked desktop counterparts.

In the end we're talking about 1120 AMD Stream Processors vs Nvidia 384 cuda cores at gimped clocks (from their desktop counterparts).

That said - it would have been nice for them to not 'simulate' performance, but actually run the tests in a notebook.

As it stands, the HD 6990M will have equal or better performance than the GTX 580M at a significantly lower price. Until nVidia drops the price on the GTX 580M, they will have a tough time competing with AMD.

However, if you compare the HD 6970M and the GTX 485M, you will notice that the nVidia card has much better idle power consumption. Take the Eurocom Racer and Schenker P501 Pro reviews on NBR for example, you can clearly see that a similar setup with the GTX 485M has significantly better (idle) battery life over the setup with the HD 6970M. The Green side just has better power management, even though the Reds have the more efficient chip.

If your laptop doesn't have switchable graphics and you care about battery life for your daily work (web-surfing, e-mail, Office, etc.), the nVidia card may be worth the extra dough.

Furthermore, babyhemi has admitted that the GTX 580M still doesn't have any certified drivers and therefore should improve over time. By how much still remains to be seen...

That's like putting a Ferrari up against a Nissan Altima and the Ferrari driver "promising" he won't press too hard on the gas.

The market should wait for apples to apples comparisons not apples to oranges.

I feel that the winner will be determined by which chip can overclock closest to its desktop counterpart.

    6990M = 715/900, 6870 = 900/1050
    580M = 620/1240/750, 560 Ti = 900/1800/1000

Interesting since the 6970 can easily be pushed to 850/1200

And the 6990m has onboard overclocking ???

Not on board, AMD has an " overdrive" utility that probably will be too conservative compared to the freedom in 3rd party utilities.

BUT, it is only for AMD chipsets so, probably useless to most mobile users.

Yur right anonymous ... but even here (coming from fudzila) you see ... "not -much- faster than GTX 580m" There is not a single review out there that suggests the 580m is a superior card to the 6990m. Everyone is saying that the 6990m is faster ... and its like ... half the price.

about the 6970m being more overclockable, as far as i know the voltage is too high on that card, which is why people have to undervolt it to reduce heat, and still have it run at stock clocks. Please correct me if im wrong, but i assume that these assumptions are correct. if i increased the voltage of my 485m i too could run much higher clocks.

it just boots it up to 740Mhz...which is okay, since I don't plan on OC a mobile GPU anyways.

You are completely wrong. The 6970 is HIGHLY OC able. Like I said, many people are running more then a 30% OC on it ...

    I run it at 800/1100 ....

    Stock is 680/900

No heat issues what so ever ... and I haven't repasted.

hmm odd because it seems like not everyone but a lot of people have undervolted it to lower the heat.

Doesn't mean they are over-volted or flawed. You can undervolt any chip (that lets you) to lower heat. I undervolted my old Core2 duo for amazing temperatures, in addition to my Geforce 7950GTX, and my current HD5870.

Chips don't all come off the manufacturing line equal.

I undervolt the 6970M because I can, not because I am forced to do so. When I run it overclocked to 830/1050, it's at the standard voltage, and there's no issue.

Ever since the 6970M got pulled, it's been all doom and gloom about it, when everything was fine before that time. It's a perfectly fine chip.

Undervolting doesn't decrease performance. It lowers temperatures (correct me if I'm wrong) and may increase the life of the card. I've seen much better battery life out of my 8150 from undervolting my gpu.

In Norway, the 6990 is about 55 US dollar more than the 6970, and 330 US dollar less than the 580M. The choice seems pretty easy id say.

it depends, you are talking like an addict without drugs, so if you dont mind losing the performance increase, well go for it, we can only base assumptions on price with what aw is offering right now, and its quite close to what the 6970m was offered, so we could assume that it would be close to what is the price of the gtx 485m today.

I would wait. When the stocks on the gtx 485m start dwidling we are going to see several resellers here telling us about it, so you could get at the last moment a gtx 485m for the bargain price

The standalone 6990M when available from Clevo will be around $450 without shipping; even cheaper than the 485M. But about the availability date, Clevo don't give any hint. Although, resellers could have it now from other sources than Clevo (AW for example) but it will be about $100 more expensive than Clevo price.
