Heat & Performance Experiences with Sager NP8678-S (Clevo P670-RG)

I'm trying to decide between the GT72 and the Sager NP8678-S (probably through Xotic PC). I really like the thinner, lighter form factor on the Sager, but I'm concerned that it comes with significantly more heat issues and/or long term reliability problems.

Can anyone tell me what their real-world gaming experience has been like on the 8678? Does it run hot? Does the build quality feel solid and durable?

Anyone compared it directly with the GT72?

I don't think the temps are anything that run that high on the 8678-S. I believe CPU during gaming can get upper 70s / lower 80s, and GPU is low 70s maybe, if I remember right. I think the GT72, depending on the model, might be a little lower on CPU and a little higher or about the same on GPU. Generally both systems are solid on cooling. I'd say it feels solid on the build quality overall.

Thanks Pat! I just spent two hours on your site, and made a spreadsheet with all of the results . I'm leaning heavily toward the 8678-S, but trying to figure out if I should upgrade the storage myself or have you do it.

I think they are both very comparable to each other. As you said the sager is a little thinner and lighter, but no optical drive if that is an issue. Heat is generally pretty good on both, and the construction quality is good. I hardly ever get complaints on Sager machines. Overall i think the sager provides more value than the MSI's do. FYI pat's in today in an hour

 

The GT72 is much better in both cooling and noise. It is whisper quiet under load, and surface temps barely budget.

The Clevo's keyboard gets warm/hot in places, and the fans are much louder under load.

In terms of actual CPU/GPU temps, both are a bit better on the GT72. While the GPU temps are only a bit better on the GT72, the CPU temps are much better. Which is normal, it's a thicker laptop with a shared cooling solution.

The GT72 also has a MXM GPU, allowing you to upgrade it down the road.

But they're slightly different machines, both in terms of size/weight and design philosophy.
