Are the issues with heat sink conduction only in the sager models with the 5870?
Are they universal? Is it every laptop, and, when I order one, will this problem have a fix or not?

I did some more searching and have found several complaints about this, and a few home made solutions, but I don't feel I have the technical savvy for them. Is there any hope those were just unlucky units?

My unit is fine. Not all suffer from this fault.

Mine is fine, too. I haven't physically looked at the heat sink, but both my GPU and CPU temps are well within the expected range.

Alright =)
I'll ask Xotic to do a burn in and hope nothing is wrong!
Thank you for the replys! -
Mine's fine too, just ask the reseller to test it before sending.

That's now the plan =D

The issues are only with some Sager models with the 5870 and a few of the home made solutions have killed GPU's. Some were private installs but quite a few have had issues from installs done by resellers as well as still having the same problems after receiving their RMA.
I know of some who were without their laptop for 5 weeks only to receive it and experience exactly the same proglem.
I have never heard of such issues with any Nvidia GPU's / heatsinks though.
I also had the problem and am back to using the GTX 285M now because it just wasn't worth the hassle. -
So this problem constitutes an RMA? If I should get a model with this issue does any one think Xotic would allow be open to me asking for an exchange of parts to the 285? I'd miss the DX11 but atleast I won't have two george foreman grills =)

Yeah the 5870 isn't worth the hassle IMO.

Means just ask xotic to do a furmark bench to make sure it's fine before sending it. But usually if they do the IC diamond replacement, they will test to see if it's working fine before sending it in.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Guess I should post it, I received my, and have had NO problems, highest GPU score I have reached was 82c after 4 hours of Crysis on High-veryhigh mixed settings.

Another issue is that ''fine'' can be subjective. For example, when I had the ATI 5870, temps under load would reach 85C in GTA IV which some may say was fine. However, with the GTX 285M in GTA IV, temps never went beyond 78C. The fan noise difference between 78C and 85C was huge but I wouldn't have known that.
So with the ATI 5870, I ended up with less performance in GTA IV and more fan noise for example.
Edit: I think I got less performance because of the game being Nvidia optimised or something to do with the ATI Drivers. -
Got mine from XOTIC and it has been great. Peaks around 65C (Borderlands) and 75C (Bioshock 2 1920x1080) depending on the game. And it traveled with me to Iraq. Everything got cooler when I pulled that black sticker off of one of the back air intakes. And XOTIC does ship with that black sticker.
