Hello, I have an old Sager, a 5791 to be exact. It's going on six years old and has served me well except for the fact that I dropped it and cracked the screen to point where the screen has become steadily unusable. Since then I've been using an external monitor.

Recently, the laptop has become unbearably slow so I decided to reformat and reinstall the copy of windows vista the computer came with. During the installation process the laptop reverted to using the laptop's screen which, like I said, has become unusable. So, as a result, I can't see anything. Does anyone know how to switch between monitors on windows vista? Or figure a way out of the mess I've created? I've googled but the only keyboard shortcuts I've found applies only to windows 7. Function plus f4 doesn't work, the windows key plus shift and left or right doesn't work and neither does windows plus p.

Sorry for the long post and thanks for reading. Hopefully someone can figure out how to help. Thanks again.

cant even find the user manual on sager website. wheres theriko when you need him :)
if its anything like my 6 year old m860tu you should have a shortcut key like Fn + one of the number keys or F keys. at work at the moment so theres no way i can check.
when installing the operating system it might need to use the lappy screen so wont work on an external screen until its loaded.

what part of the world are you from as you could get it repaired.

Thanks for the quick reply. I tried the fn keys with the f keys and none if it seemed to work.

I'm in the US. I checked with sager and they quoted $700 for a new screen which at that price, I'd rather get a new computer. Sigh, I suppose it might be time to move on anyway.

Find out what LCD it uses and check out eBay, $700 is wayyyy too much.

Also seeing as you've formatted why not just clear it, load up win7 (even just an eval. copy) and go from there, I wouldn't even try my luck on vista, too much zig zagging to get where u want to go.

**just to add, there are some LCD's on eBay for just under $100, much better than what was quoted.

    700 for a screen, ouch.
im not sure how repairs work in the states but it might be worth asking some of the other suppliers like xotic, prostar, mythlogic. ive seen mythlogic post that they do out of warranty repairs.

So long as your order the right screen it's not too difficult to do a screen repair yourself.

You shouldn't need to buy a new screen if you're happy the way it is.

    Tried FN+F5?

It should also go right to the VGA once you close the lid. But I'm guessing that closing the lid puts it into sleep mode? Maybe, close the lid, let it go into sleep, then open the lid, hit the power button, and close it quickly.

Or disable the 'sleep function on lid close' via the Windows Power Options if that's the case. Whichever is most convenient for you. :)

Hm.. idk if this works with Vista, but maybe you can take out the HDD, install an OS onto it using another computer, then plug the HDD back?
I think I tried it with XP and it worked, just had to install bunch of drivers.. but I heard Win7 forces you to reinstall sometimes..

@Above I dont think he can access that if he wiped his OS
