    my optical drive isn't reading anything
    I got my computer yesterday, NP5790. Now it's not reading anything.
    I thought it was the dvd, but its brand new as are the cds

    Alright, I was thinking it could be Starforce related, but if you haven't installed any games you should be safe from that.

    Hrm...have you tried booting into Safe Mode to see if the CD/DVD shows up? Have you checked your BIOS to see if the drive is showing up there? Etc...?

    Okay my device driver software for my optical drive was not successfully installed.

    I've tried updating, but it's already up to date.

    I've uninstalled the driver and reinstalled a couple time but get this:
    TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-L632D ATA Device Failed

    Under driver details:
    C:\\Windows\SysWOW64\drivers\Afc.sys
    Digital Signer: Not digitally signed.

    I figured it out. I shouldn't try and solve problems when I rather be asleep.

    It was a Vista Compatibility issue : )
