    oh my god.

Ok this just happened an hour ago. My laptop had been asleep for about 12 hours and I plugged it in and turned it back on. As soon as I plugged it in the powerbrick started making a high pitched clicking sound, almost like a capacitor charging and discharging...

I immediatly unplugged the brick from the computer. The computer was no longer asleep, it was now off. I tried to turn it back on under battery power, no luck. I took the battery out, plugged it in and the powerbrick starting making the same sound when I plugged it back into the computer.

I smelled the back of the computer, and there was a scent of something burning. I've smelled a few burnt desktop powersupplies and they smelled a little different, but I have no idea what kinda hardware is inside a laptop.

So, wow. I've had this laptop since Feb, and I've not had a single problem or issue ever with anything.

I have a 2 year warrenty from XoticPC and I'll be calling them on Monday.

OK BIG QUESTION: Is my harddrive going to be ok? It has some Very important and senstive work on it that I must recover. I'll be taking it out as soon as I get home on Tuesday and hooking it up to my desktop, but I don't know if my nerves will make it untill then...

Yeah, I'm sure your hard drive will be fine. most likely the Power adapter screwed over the "power system" of the laptop and shorted it out due to probably too much voltage or a fluctuation. but, im sure your hard drive is fine.

You just lowered my blood pressure and probably allowed me to sleep tonight.

My doctor, my heart, and my girlfriend thank you.

    Thanks for the support guys!

I just wish I knew what happened...Is it a bad idea to plug the brick into the laptop before plugging the brick into the wall?

And I'm guessing it won't be an issue if I send it in without the harddrive...There is classified data on it ,so it's staying with me :)

I doubt the HDD suffered but for future issues, I have one suggestion
in the form of one word.

OK I got an RMA number for the laptop and I'll be sending it in sometime tomorrow.

I've yet to test out to see if the harddrive is still working, but I'll do that when I get home late tonight. This weekend was my 'amazing' 4 day vacation weekend...

Being an engineer it's really bugging me that I don't know what caused this. All I did was plug the laptop into the 'surge protection only' side of a medium sized UPS. So there was no 'surge,' but maybe somehow the UPS was messed up? There was a another computer plugged into it the whole time and nothing was wrong wrong with it.

step 1) take asleep laptop and open lid
step 2) plug brick into laptop, plug brick into ups.
step 3) walk away for 30 seconds to find my mouse
step 4) come back and the brick is 'chirping,' the light on it is flashing, and my laptop is dead

Honestly, life can be lame sometimes.

For the record I do back up my data once a week (on Fridays  ) but I'm only allowed to back up work material, and I didn't even do it this week

Your hard drive is fine, and it sounds like the power brick itself went bad - imo, nothing you could have done, except maybe check the brick and see if it was running hot previously. Plugging it into the power source before your notebook might have affected it or overloaded the brick if the brick's a crappy make or was already failing.

Buy an external 2.5inch enclosure! They're like $10-15, and then you can always check if your data's ok. And remove the hard drive before sending your notebook in.

Did you reset your notebook? Usually this is done by removing the battery, unplugging it, and holding down the power button(s), but varies by model sometimes. It probably wouldn't help if you smelt something burning, but it usually helps fix notebooks that act oddly/won't boot after power issues.

LOL I was visiting my girlfriend at the time (she works/lives on this tiny island) and after it happened she felt really responsible/worried that it might have been the crappy power that they have on the island the caused it.

    Ok but...UPDATE:

The hdd is fine, and happily connected to my desktop.

The laptop is in transit to Sager.

    Thanks for the support everyone!!
