Please help me to answer these questions since they may help some of the people who bought this laptop.
1) Since some people has power brick without a fan, please take a picture of the power brick, especially the underside of it with all the specifications.
2) People with power brick that doesn't have a fan, please tell me how hot is your HDD.
I am asking this is because I remembered of smelling something burning the first time I plugged in my power brick. I am guess I may be not using (receiving) the right power brick, and this possiblly wrong power brick may have fried some components inside the laptop and causing the HDD to be excessively hot.
So, please answer my questions, then we will be steps closer to solve this problem.
Here is a link to people with similar problem but on a pc. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080328232421AAJZS0F

Is there a way to remove rep from people?

lol - this is too funny. I guess he doesn't need to know. lol.

Sounds like a promising idea youdontneedtoknow, so can owners please help
I will when i receive mine.

I'll let you know today (hopefully, may customs be lenient and not total A-holes) or by latest tomorrow about that fan thing man.
And if anything, a possibly solution, because if my laptop starts burning my hand, I'm calling my reseller to ask them what can be done in that situation (some home made extra cooling solutions probably).
But No way in hell am I waiting for responses on a forum when it's physical pain. -
The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
When you normally plug in a new electronic equipment there is a slight smell similar to that of burning plastic.
-
I have found this to be the case as well...the smell usually disapates within an hour or so.
-
i have a fan in my powerbrick and the idle temperature is 57c with web browsing and minor tasks.
-
Here's my new retarded deduction about the hard drive: Fan in powerbrick = Hot HDD. No fan = Less hot HDD
-
No fan, sitting at 53 right now. Also, Eurocom put an extra piece of foil/cardboard in between my HD and the motherboard.
I think the power thing is an interesting idea, but probably not the problem. Check your temps running on battery in high performance. -

I did check the battery too, but if the mother board already having problem from the power brick, running on battery won't be very helpful.
The clevo m860tu was on display for a long time and no one noticed any temperature problem. I wonder why we are having them right now? And seeing the different power bricks makes me thinking maybe resellers try to reduce cost by supplying their own power brick, this is only a speculation though. -
I'm also pretty sure the powerbrick is not the cause of the HDD problem but instead, it indicates which laptop have this problem. Here's my conspiracy theory: Sager ships hard drives that have a tendency to produce more heat with a powerbrick that have a fan while hard drives at around 50-55 don't have a powerbrick with a fan.
-
I don't think that Sager gets to choose the HD themselves; I thought the resellers did that?
Like I said earlier, my power brick puts out 20V/6.0 A and the part number is 0227A20120 from Li Shin International Enterprise Corp.
Basically this base:
http://www.pchub.com/uph/laptop/46-29738-3085/Li-Shin-0227A20120-AC-Power-Adapter.html
Just a different connector on the end. -
-
Only Sager gets their hand on the laptop, not resellers like XoticPC or Powernotebook.
-
JagerQ, why don't you take a picture of this cardboard/foil?
Maybe people can try and make one themselves and voila, the problem could be solved.
I'm also a little disappointed that Eurocom did this but not Sager, it suggests that Euro may have been just silghtly more attentive in the testing process. -

OK this is the power brick I have and this is what Clevo requires
Full Range AC adapter 120W, AC in 100~240V, 50~60Hz, DC output:20V, 6.0A

They have done an action to indicate this in the past. (Upgrading the individuals with the graphics cards that were not ready yet) -
It weighs a whole freaking pound?
-
My power brick has a fan, Hitachi HDD idle temps at 50-51C, haven't seen it warmer than 55C. Power brick made by EDACPOWER ELEC Model EA11203b, 130W
-
I just can't see where is the problem about the hard drive if its not the speed, the brand, the powerbrick... We'll just have to wait and see if Sager says something and if Eurocom's laptop have this problem.
-
I think Chunghwa reported highish temps too, so ProStar also has some probs.
Anyone else buying from them? -
Has anyone actually taken the thing apart to at least check the heatsinks?
-
youdontneedtoknow Notebook Evangelist
Yes, the heatsinks and the NB was not that hot. The HDD was pretty hot, but of course not as hot as the heatsink on GPU.
-
My HDD is 67* celcius (152* F) idle in windows xp. This is a 5 year old dell laptop, and there has NEVER been any problems with the harddrive. I can see the problem with the palmrest being hot. That would be a serious issue for me. But why do you care if its 49 or 55 ? As long as the hdd is working i dont see the problem?
-
Well if the temps are high, there is, in theory, more chance that the hard drive will fail. Maybe it didn't happen to you but I can say that a hot hard drive have more heat have more chances to fail.
I don't really care that my hard drive is at 60 since I will keep a good backup and have a good warranty, but you can point out that there is a problem when the hard drive is hotter than the GPU: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3846945&postcount=4
UPDATE: I think we should keep the hard drive related thread here or at least, put the information here. Also, Ive got another conspiracy theory: All laptops that were preordered have an issue with the HDD and new ones don't. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3847109&postcount=20 -
Got a silly idea...can we confirm that it is the HDDs themselves that are running hot by connecting them to a desktop and then doing something like a virus scan? I'm not sure that laptop and desktop SATA are compatible.
-
For the record.. I have noticed a bit of a smell when using my NP8860 sometimes.
I'm pretty sure I can see a fan in my power brick.. but I have NEVER seen or heard it spinning and i've had the power brick get hot enough that I can't comfortably hold onto it for more than a few seconds. -
My HD's started hitting 65 now that I'm at home. The ambient temp. at work is around 22C while it's more like 24. I'm also using it on a bed, elevated to allow airflow.
I'm also able to detect SMART errors on ID BE where the value is below threshold. I don't know what that means, but it only happens when the HD is over 60.
The temp doesn't correlate with usage; it was fine when I was installing stuff but sucks right now.
It is definately the HD in my case. I popped the case and checked, the thing was very hot to touch and the motherboard underneath was cooler than the HD.
Could there be a problem with the software/firmware in some HDs with this chipset? I don't have another SATA drive to check with, but I may pick one up if this keeps up. Did someone say Hitachi's run cool? -
And yes, Hitachis seem to run cooler, but then again they aren't as heat resistant as Seagates. -
At least, if it was the hard drive, I would be happy as the solution is easy. But for now, I can't see a template on this problem. Everything seems random.
