Close to buying, need some advice![]()
I had my eyes dead set on the NP8660 but the short battery life (I probably need 3hrs next semester, or else I'd have to lug around the NP8660 power brick and charge it in between classes/use an outlet-- which sounds like a pain in the , this has me thinking NP2096 or DV5T (9,12cell).
I've been out of gaming the past 4 months but next semester I can probably squeeze some time in![]()
I have yet to beat The Orange Box & TES4: Oblivion and play Company of Heroes, that's pretty much it. As much as I hate 128bit gpu's could the 9600M GT run those at 1680*1050 medium settings?/1200*800 high?
Would the NP8660 be overkill (GPU) /unreasonable (battery life, portability)?
NP8660 owners, have you touched 3hrs, 'undervolting'?

Wow, ARom, you're finally starting the purchasing process
. I'm sure a 9600M could do the job on medium. But except if you have some US funds, I don't its not the right time to buy because of the currency although the holiday sale helps. You could also consider the Aus G50vt, either X1 or A1/A2. It can achieve some 4hrs of battery life.
Depending on your power needs (that you already said) vs your portability needs, it might be overkill as it could perfectly fit your needs. You could easily live with it if you don't need this laptop everyday and only use it in one class or two max. -

We're Clevo fans here, so you know what everyone's going to recommend
I wouldn't hold my breath for 3 hours without a spare battery. 2 hours and a half perhaps on silent mode (more important than undervolting imo) if you're lucky, likely around 2 hours and change.

I get around two and a half hours with my EDGE. If you want more battery life with the machine, I'd suggest you get a second battery.
Remember, this is a 9800m GT, made for power, not for battery life.
Although, in your case, I'd recommend the 9600m GT. A friend of mine has a Mac with one in it and he plays those games good, albiet, not as great as the 9800m GT, but good to the point that you can play it and not CRY that you aren't seeing the rain splashing on the texture as detailed as the other guy. -
128bit just isn't going to cut it in 2009.
8660 + second battery is the best move, especially with Sager's sale. -
But not with the currency (1USD = 1.25CAD) aka, 25% more expensive
-
i would also now recc the 9800 especially since we are headed into 2009 as said above. 9600 imo just will not cut it the further we go into next year
Help me decide (NP8660 vs NP2096)
