If size and cost is not an option go with the 17".
- Bigger screen (especially if you are replacing your desktop with it)
- More internal space for cooling
- Format of the MXM card is established on several models so upgradability is more likely
- Excellent track record on a machine that has been around a long time (not brand new)
- The 15.4" is an unproven design and there have been heat issues from other notebooks that utilize the 15.4" footprint and this GPU
- WUXGA on a 15.4" screen is ridiculously small, if you go 15.4" go WSXGA+ IMHO
- Might want to consider the 3 year warranty upgrade if you are trying to make it last 4 years
I am not a huge fan of the SSD drives, I would recommend the 320 7,200 rpm
For the record, labor warranty's mean very little. You might as well just buy a new hard drive or stick of RAM and put it in yourself if you're out of warranty. By the time it's shipped, you are overcharged for parts and it is shipped back it is at the ridiculous price level already so you might as well do it yourself. The parts will cost you the most. Distributors want to charge anywhere from $600 to $750 for an LCD screen alone! I can send you pictures of how to change that, or a keyboard or just about anything else that is going to go wrong in 5 minutes yourself! -
If you are on the fence then I agree with KillerNotebooks. Go with the 17". Your eyes will thank you.
-
sweet! that would be nice of you. im still thinking about it i probbly will most likely go for the NP5796 but i still want more thoughts =]
-
You can always go with the NP8660's WUXGA display (all other issues side) and increase the DPI so that fonts are more readable, etc. and that all normal tasks (productivity, web browsing, etc.) are all perfectly readable and clear.
Additionally, matte screens being less bright than glossy ones is less true than ever (KillerNotebooks mentioned this in a different thread), so if that were an issue with matte screens, you shouldn't worry too much.
This way, if you wanted the 8660, downscaling to lower non-native resolutions would result in a crisper image than if you had downscaled from 1680x1050.
I am not commenting on the other issues of 15.4 vs. 17, but as far as displays go, WUXGA is still a pretty good option IMHO. -

That's true. Sometimes having the extra real estate, maybe for graphics design or something would be nice.

The extra labor warranty may not be that beneficial for easy repairs such as RAM, HDD, Keyboard etc.... but it can be useful for some of the later years if a motherboard swap is needed or something that involves tearing apart the chassis.
As others above have stated, the WUXGA and the extra real estate is nice to have in a 17". -

True. There are times you would need it and since it doesn't cost anything how can you go wrong?
Also though, you and I both know though that they charge so much for those parts that you might as well just upgrade the whole chassis if the MB goes bad.
Sometimes when I get these price quotes for repair I just say, "Hey, will you buy it from me for that price? Because I'll buy a chassis, take it apart and ship it back to you and make triple what I paid for it!"
$600 for an LCD, $65 for a keyboard, $450 for a motherboard, $45 for a case bottom, $45 for a cover...
To give you an idea, I just traded in an Executioner I sold in 2006. Almost 2 years ago exactly. It had a T2500 processor. People forget how fast this stuff changes. Repairing a 2 or 3 year old computer is questionable. What am I going to use a T2500 for... an upgrade to my kids Furby?

That is correct ^ Motherboard replacements and overall parts are not cheap.
-
yea i can tell i mean might as well buy a whole new notebook ^_^
Help me decide NP8660 or NP5796?
